Michael Thurmond, the previous CEO of DeKalb County, has made his intentions to run for governor of Georgia public. At the heart of his official announcement was a captivating campaign advertisement. The ‘Boots on Georgia Ground’ advertisement exhibited clips of Thurmond addressing the crowd at the June ‘No Kings’ protest in Athens. He outlined ‘healthcare, crime, and inflation’ as priority areas of focus should he acquire office.
The ‘No Kings’ rallies, which happened across the nation, were mobilized to resist militaristic parades and a series of independent actions that have been on the rise since the January inauguration. One such action included the massive layoff of federal workers in Georgia’s Atlanta metropolitan region. During the course of this advertisement, Thurmond’s voice reverberates with the message, ‘don’t get discouraged’, a rallying cry for Georgians resisting political movements seeking to extensively cut social security programs such as Medicaid, SNAP, and HUD rental assistance.
Thurmond declared his candidacy for the governorship with the intention to defend working families, strive for the betterment and availability of healthcare, and foster an education system providing multiple routes to success. Among a steadily increasing assembly of contestants for the governorship, Thurmond has gained recognition. He is the only African American competitor who has previously won a statewide office.
In 1998, 72-year old Thurmond etched his name in the annals of Georgia history when he emerged victorious in the labor commissioner’s race, becoming the inaugural non-holding Black person to clinch a state office. The Athens-born Thurmond, now, aspires to repeat history in the upcoming year by becoming the first African American to be elected governor.
But, the path to the governor’s mansion contains potential roadblocks in the form of several other formidable Black aspirants in the Democratic primary. State Representative Derrick Jackson declared his intention to contest the election in June, potentially posing a significant challenge.
Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, known and respected in political circles, has also indicated an interest in the race. She recently achieved a significant endorsement, a fact that could enable her to leverage the disgruntlement people hold over the large-scale layoffs of federal workers.
Moreover, State Senator Jason Esteves is actively participating in the race, attracting endorsements and building a credible campaign. Adding to the lineup of contenders, rumors suggest Stacey Abrams, a prominent political figure, may be considering a third attempt at clinching the title of Georgia’s next chief executive.
In the Republican field, the contest is heating up as well. In November, Attorney General Chris Carr blazed the trail as the initial Republican aspirant setting his sights on the governorship, a position presently occupied by incumbent GOP governor, Brian Kemp.
Lt. Governor Burt Jones has also made his ambition clear following the path laid by Carr, announcing his candidacy in June. The tension is mounting on both sides of the aisle, setting the stage for an intensely competitive gubernatorial race.
