President Donald Trump has removed IRS Commissioner Billy Long from his post just two months after swearing him in, temporarily handing the reins to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent while naming Long as the next U.S. ambassador to Iceland.
A senior White House official confirmed the personnel shift Friday, noting that Bessent — already managing high-stakes trade talks with China, Canada, and Mexico while helping lead the search for a new Federal Reserve chair — will now also oversee the tax agency until a permanent replacement is chosen.
Long, a former Missouri congressman who once co-sponsored legislation to abolish the IRS entirely, expressed enthusiasm for his new diplomatic role. “It is an honor to serve my friend President Trump, and I am excited to take on my new role as the ambassador to Iceland,” he said. “I am thrilled to answer his call to service and deeply committed to advancing his bold agenda.
