A Department of Justice employee has been fired and charged with felony assault after hurling a Subway sandwich at a federal agent in Washington, D.C., amid President Donald Trump’s federal takeover of the city’s police force. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed Thursday that the suspect, 37-year-old Sean Charles Dunn, had been working for the DOJ before the incident.
The altercation was caught on video by a bystander and quickly circulated online. It shows Dunn berating federal agents deployed under Trump’s order to federalize the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and launch an aggressive crackdown on violent crime. Dunn can be heard screaming obscenities, calling the officers “fascists,” and angrily demanding to know which vehicles they were using. At first, he walked away while carrying a Subway sandwich, but moments later he turned back, crossed the street, and confronted the agents again. After more verbal abuse, Dunn wound up and threw his sandwich directly into the chest of one of the officers. He attempted to flee but was chased down and arrested on the spot.

Bondi reacted strongly to the episode in a post on X. “I just learned that this defendant worked at the Department of Justice,” she wrote. “He has been terminated. This is an example of the Deep State we have been up against for seven months as we work to refocus DOJ. You will NOT work in this administration while disrespecting our government and law enforcement.”
According to a criminal complaint, Dunn admitted to throwing the sandwich and even told investigators he thought it was “funny.” U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro dismissed that explanation in blunt terms. “Well, he doesn’t think it’s funny today because we charged him with a felony: assault on a police officer,” Pirro said. “And we’re going to back the police to the hilt, so there, stick your Subway sandwich somewhere else.”
Assault a law enforcement officer, and you’ll be prosecuted.

The incident highlights the tensions surrounding Trump’s decision to seize control of D.C. policing under the District of Columbia Home Rule Act. The move brought in federal agents from the FBI, DEA, ATF, U.S. Capitol Police, and 800 National Guard troops, all working alongside local law enforcement to restore order in the capital. Since Trump’s directive went into effect, federal authorities have made roughly 150 arrests, including suspects tied to violent crimes, firearms violations, and drug trafficking.
While the crackdown has already netted results, the show of federal force has fueled anger from Democrats and activist groups, who accuse Trump of overstepping his authority. Some D.C. residents gathered in protest on Wednesday night, chanting “Go home, fascists” and “Get off our streets” at federal agents. But Trump’s team insists the operation is already making the city safer, pointing to the arrests and removal of violent offenders.
For Bondi and Pirro, the bizarre case of a DOJ insider lashing out with a sandwich underscores their message: the administration is determined to purge disloyalty inside government ranks and restore respect for law enforcement. Dunn’s prosecution, they argue, is not just about one incident but about setting the tone in a Justice Department that Trump and his allies believe was weaponized against him for years.
