US Military Prepares to Deploy National Guard in Washington D.C.

The United States military is currently in the process of making arrangements to engage the services of the National Guard in Washington D.C., under the directive of President Trump. This move comes as a response to what the president perceives as escalating street crime in the city. Until the early hours of Monday, the president had not stamped approval on any formal deployment briefs. Nonetheless, predictions lean towards an imminent proclamation at a White House press briefing where he will sanction the deployment of a significant force of the District of Columbia National Guard to collaborate with the city’s law enforcement agencies.

The specifics of the announcement were sparse in the early breaks of Monday and the finer details were yet to be confirmed. Washington D.C.’s crime statistics have been witnessing a downward trend in recent times. However, President Trump insists that the situation has spiraled out of control and has even hinted towards the potential necessity of an intervention by federal authority.

If these potential measures were to go into effect, as per the coverage by Reuters, the National Guard soldiers may not receive the power to make arrests. Their duties would primarily focus on providing support to the local law enforcement officials, allowing the latter to dedicate their efforts and resources to patrol tasks rather than administrative or logistical burdens.

Simultaneously, an interim transfer of around 120 F.B.I. agents to nocturnal patrol duties in the city is also on the President’s agenda. This re-deployment is planned as another measure in his series of actions to combat the increased crime rates. The majority of these agents will be reassigned from their routine responsibilities at the Washington office of the F.B.I.

The military’s action in Washington follows a similar one precedently enacted this past summer. Close to 5,000 National Guard soldiers had been deployed in Los Angeles. The orders they had been given were specific: help contain the uproar sparked by immigration invasions and ensure the safety of the federal agents dispatched to conduct them.

However, from that deployment, only a small fraction of these National Guardsmen, roughly 250, have remained on station. The lion’s share of the soldiers has been phased out of deployment and returned from their posts.

During his tenure’s initial phase, President Trump had previously enlisted the services of both domestic military and federal law enforcement troops. This was done with the goal to handle the peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstrations that had assembled following the tragic event of George Floyd’s police-inflicted demise in 2020.

In terms of jurisdiction, the District of Columbia doesn’t hold power over its National Guard, unlike typical state governance. This discrepancy provides the President with the flexibility and the capacity to enact a wide range deployment of these troops whenever deemed necessary.
