President Donald Trump on Tuesday pledged to strip left-wing ideology from America’s museums, singling out the Smithsonian Institution as an example of how cultural institutions have been overtaken by “woke” narratives.
In a Truth Social post, Trump blasted museums across the country for focusing on America’s faults rather than its achievements.
“The Museums throughout Washington, but all over the country are, essentially, the last remaining segment of ‘WOKE,’” Trump said. “The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our country is, how bad slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — nothing about success, nothing about brightness, nothing about the future.”
Trump announced he has directed his attorneys to apply the same strategy used to dismantle woke programs in colleges and universities toward cultural institutions. “This country cannot be WOKE, because WOKE IS BROKE,” Trump emphasized. “We have the ‘HOTTEST’ country in the world, and we want people to talk about it, including in our museums.”
The Smithsonian has increasingly promoted ideological narratives on race, gender, and politics in its exhibitions, including BLM-related material, radical gender theory, and left-wing portrayals of recent events like the pandemic. The Trump administration has now moved to intervene.
Last week, administration officials Lindsey Halligan, Vince Haley, and Russ Vought sent a letter to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch announcing a “comprehensive internal review of selected Smithsonian museums and exhibitions” under Trump’s “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History” executive order. The review will focus on celebrating American exceptionalism, removing divisive content, and ensuring historical accuracy.
Trump has already launched similar actions in higher education. Earlier this year, schools and universities were given two weeks to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs or risk losing federal funding. The Department of Education barred institutions from using racial preferences in admissions, hiring, and financial aid.
In addition, Trump required schools to follow biological definitions of sex and gender. This led to high-profile cases such as the University of Pennsylvania being forced to strip transgender swimmer Lia Thomas of women’s team titles.
The president’s latest effort marks a new front in his campaign to restore what he calls “truthful and uplifting” representations of America across cultural, academic, and historical institutions.
