Elon Musk has put his plans for a new political party on ice as he reconsiders whether to throw his weight behind Vice President JD Vance in 2028.
The Tesla and SpaceX chief floated the idea of launching the “America Party” earlier this summer amid a highly publicized feud with President Trump over the One Big, Beautiful Bill. But according to reports, Musk is cooling on the idea out of concern it could create unnecessary fractures within the Republican coalition, particularly with Vance positioned as Trump’s most likely successor.
Musk, who spent nearly $300 million supporting Trump and GOP candidates in the 2024 election cycle, has reportedly told associates he is now weighing financial support for a potential Vance presidential bid. The move would mark a strategic shift from independence to influence inside the Republican fold.
Trump himself recently suggested Vance is “most likely” the frontrunner for the GOP in 2028, praising his work as vice president while also nodding to other potential contenders like Sen. Marco Rubio. Still, Trump noted Vance would be “favored at this point” given his current position and strong performance.
The Musk-Trump feud that flared over the summer appears to have cooled, with fewer public clashes in recent weeks. Vance has been a central figure in smoothing over tensions, telling conservative outlets that Musk should “come back into the fold” and warning that Democrats “will never have him back.” Vance argued Musk was indispensable in 2024 and could again be a vital player heading into the midterms and beyond.
For now, Musk seems to be holding back from creating a disruptive third party, choosing instead to reassess his role in shaping the GOP’s post-Trump future — a future in which JD Vance is already emerging as a dominant force.
