On Thursday, former president Donald Trump met with law enforcement officials and military personnel that he had stationed in the US capital as part of an asserted effort to curtail crime. He relayed that their presence in the capital city was not temporary, stating that they intended to ‘stick around.’ Hundreds of Guard members, a backup military force, had been posted in Washington upon his mandate, expressing a mission to restore lawful order to the capital. This, despite demonstrations from some city citizens and data hinting at a decrease in violent crimes.
He declared their resolve to restore safety, and then move on to other locations, however, he emphasized that their stay in the capital would be prolonged. ‘We have a desire to make this pristine,’ he expressed while at a U.S. Park Police station in Washington. Stand beside him were various representatives from local and federal law enforcement, as well as National Guard soldiers. Trump, a septuagenarian Republican, had earlier relayed plans to patrol alongside the officers and military personnel.
However, the day concluded with him delivering a short address and distributing pizzas and hamburgers. Trump maintained that with their presence, ‘everyone feels secure,’ and expressed his intention to uplift the physical appearance of the city. ‘We’ll be working on improving your parks. My proficiency in maintaining greens is well-known, stemming from my many golf courses around the globe. My knowledge about grass exceeds that of anyone else,’ he commented.
In the next morning’s social media post, he took pride in the ‘zero murders this week, a first in recent memory’ in Washington. He challenged Mayor Muriel Bowser to refrain from issuing ‘exaggerated and incorrect crime figures’ lest the federal government seize complete control of the city. His statement followed Bowser’s claim that the city had seen the lowest violent crime rate it had in the past three decades.
Trump’s rendezvous with law enforcement and military personnel happened a day later than Vice President JD Vance’s interaction with the forces. Vance, during his visit, was met with disapproval and shouts of ‘Free DC’, a reference to Washington’s official name, District of Columbia. JD Vance shrugged off the opposition, dismissing them as ‘a horde of wild protesters.’
In response to the situation, the DC National Guard has commissioned 800 soldiers, and some Republican states, including Ohio, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia, have agreed collectively to send approximately 1,200 more. The enlisted forces have since been spotted in places frequented by tourists, such as the National Mall and its monuments, Nationals Park baseball stadium, and other destinations.
Washington, mainly a Democrat-oriented capital, has been dealing with accusations coming from Republican politicians who claim that the city has fallen prey to crime, rampant homelessness, and improper financial management. Nevertheless, local police data revealed a significant decrease in violent criminal activity from 2023 to 2024. This period of decline follows a spike that occurred right after the pandemic.
Some inhabitants of the city have expressed appreciation for the push towards law and order, citing their troubled neighborhoods. Conversely, others argue that the usage of force is disproportional and is often not observable in areas where violence is rampant. A handful of incidents involving the increased police presence have gained attention online, with locals expressing their dissatisfaction. One such instance was the arrest of a man caught on camera lobbing a sandwich at an officer.
The National Guard soldiers’ roles have been defined as providing crucial support in areas such as managing crowds, maintaining a visible position in patrols, and controlling perimeters in law enforcement support. Alongside deploying troops on the streets, Trump had been vocal about aiming to obtain full control over the Washington police department, making an attempt at one point to undermine its leadership.
The decision to position troops in Washington followed Trump’s earlier move to assign National Guard and Marine officers to Los Angeles, California, to suppress upheaval initiated by immigration law enforcement raids.
