Late on Wednesday, in a sizable escalation of tensions, Russia executed the most aggressive strike against Ukraine since peace negotiations first began. The strike consisted of a bombardment from 598 drones and 31 missiles, all targeted at Ukraine. The majority were intercepted and destroyed, yet several managed to bypass Ukraine’s defensive capabilities, striking over 20 areas within the capital city, Kyiv. Among the hit targets was a facility in close proximity to the mission of the European Union, sustaining severe damage.
This large-scale attack happened right after a separate Russian missile strike on another critical infrastructure – a factory operated by the United States within Ukraine. This increased aggression comes post a couple of summits, intended for reaching a mutually agreeable treaty. The summits were attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, currently facing a warrant of arrest by the International Criminal Court, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from Ukraine, and several leaders from Europe.
These turn of events have drastically reduced the chances of any further negotiations between Putin and Zelenskyy. Ukraine has shown resistance to the imperialistic demands of Russia, which include the annexation of territorial land and the provision for Russia to veto any guarantees of security to shield against future Russian aggression. The attempts to appease Putin by dividing Ukraine into sections primarily serves corporate interests, enabling them to exploit the nation’s mineral resources and profit from the country’s reconstruction.
This ‘divide-and-rule’ strategy aimed at pressuring Zelenskyy into accepting ‘land swaps’, essentially means accepting Russia’s illegal occupation of substantial Ukrainian territory as a ransom for peace. However, the President of Ukraine is constitutionally forbidden to give away sovereign territories. Furthermore, a significant majority of the Ukrainian population, precisely about 70 percent, are against such a peace deal.
The people of Ukraine are well aware that such compromising negotiations would inevitably lead to severe oppression for the inhabitants of the occupied areas. They fear that Putin would take a temporary halt from the ongoing war just to eventually restart it to accomplish his objective — pulling Ukraine within Russia’s imperialist sphere of influence.
Contrary to the expected smooth peace process, Putin upped the antics by amplifying the war with more missile strikes and drone attacks. This act reveals his true objective – to conquer more Ukrainian land for Russia. Amidst this unstable situation, the living conditions varied across the country along with the effects of the war. The dire plight of Ukraine, the importance of its progressive forces, and why the U.S. left should rally in support for Ukraine’s campaign for self-determination, were some highlighted subjects in various debates.
In the midst of these negotiations and the ongoing war, resistance runs deep among Ukrainians. A majority stand strong against these moves to partition their homeland, attesting to their commitment to preserving their nation’s unity. Stories have surfaced about the dreadful experiences of those driven out of their homes due to the conflict, burdening the housing market and living costs in the cities where they found shelter.
The peace conferences elicited a variety of reactions, with many questioning the motives and plans being implemented. Ukrainians stand united in their demand to uphold their country’s sovereignty and the return of all annexed land. These demands starkly contrast with the conditions being imposed on them.
Apprehensions about the repercussions of any given compromises are rising. This includes the possibilities of callous governance in the territories annexed by Russia and the looming threat of a never-ending cycle of conflict and territorial acquisition.
Nevertheless, Ukraine’s present predicament has sparked a wave of progressive movements across the country. These movements advocate for issues of their concern amid the strife to defend their homeland from foreign aggression. These include calls for greater democratization, improved social programs, and better wages and benefits.
Ukrainians also recognize that addressing these issues could strengthen their unity, thereby fostering a collective resolve to fight for their independence. In light of this, they call for the international community to not only understand but also extend their support and unite in solidarity with their struggle.
Emphasizing the importance of opposing foreign occupation and backing self-determination, Ukrainians believe that this is the key to preserving peace, fairness, and equality. And thus, amidst these trying times, Ukraine turns hopeful eyes towards a global community that will stand by their side during their continuous struggle for autonomy.
