Barack Obama, who made an appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024, is now coming under scrutiny from newly unveiled government documents. These classified papers highlight his presence in crucial meetings that birthed the initial stages of what eventually came to be known as the misleading Trump-Russia investigation, or Russiagate. This deceptive narrative, propagated by the unsuccessful campaign of Hillary Clinton, aimed to link Trump’s campaign with Russian interference.
The baseless Buzzfeed Dossier, which triggered a lengthy and fruitless probe that only served to fan the flames of anti-Trump sentiment, notably led by figures such as then-Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif. Despite conclusive evidence never surfacing, these Borgias of bureaucracy continue to assert claims regarding the fabricated conspiracy theory. This unfounded investigation, known as Crossfire Hurricane, is now in the spotlight, with revealing government documents being made public by the Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe.
Accusations swirl that Obama, as per Trump’s account, played a key role in spearheading this conspiracy, although Obama vehemently denies these charges. His spokesperson denounced these claims as far-fetched and laughable. However, Obama and his key administration members are now the subject of Congressional probe, with the Department of Justice also examining their role in this controversial case.
Reports suggest that Obama participated repeatedly in meetings where this charade was advanced. For instance, at a meeting on Aug. 3, 2016, Obama was reportedly informed by then-CIA chief John Brennan about Clinton’s alleged scheme to correlate Trump with Russia, as a deflection from her own email scandal. Another instance was the meeting on July 31, 2016, where it was decided that the investigation into Trump’s campaign would be opened.
Documents referring to a 2020 Counterintelligence Operational Lead, reveal specific phrasing intended for the sole use of the respective bureau for either background investigative action or lead purposes as appropriate. Strangely intriguing is the FBI verbal request which led the CIA to provide the below examples of information generated by the CROSSFIRE HURRICANE fusion cell.
The cryptic paragraphs discuss then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s approval of a plan to elevate accusations of Russian hackers disrupting US elections. This move was designed to distract the public from her private email server debacle. Additionally, the claim has been made that foreign sources with plausible links to left-wing billionaire George Soros, a outspoken critic of Trump, were circulating emails regarding the new investigation.
Situating the allegation of Russian interference neatly within the realm of domestic politics, the intention was to whip up a frenzy around this fabricated threat to the election infrastructure. This narrative found some support within the government, with both the President and Vice President seeming to echo these claims. However, tangible evidence remarkably remains at large.
The narrative continues post-election, with the report suggesting Obama advised Trump against including Michael Flynn, previously Obama’s head of military intelligence, in his administration. Flynn did subsequently find himself embroiled in the Russiagate drama, pleading guilty to false statements regarding a meeting with a Russian official. He was ensnared in legal issues, stringing him along until the DOJ eventually dropped its case against him.
New documents indicated agents discussing their motivations to interview Flynn, apparently hoping to catch him in a lie. Flynn would later condemn Obama’s supporters for pushing him into a perjury trap. Current Director of National Intelligence Gabbard recently declassified documents that exposed the Obama administration’s alleged meddling and politicizing of intelligence in an attempt to draw spurious links between Russia and the 2016 election.
Evidence further highlights that the intelligence community, in the lead-up to the November 2016 election, generally concurred that Russia was likely uninterested in influencing the election through cyber means. This narrative, however, was contradicted by other claims within the Democratic Party concerning Trump’s supposed relationship with Russia.
Moreover, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper undermined the false narrative by asserting that foreign adversaries didn’t utilize cyberattacks to alter the U.S. presidential election outcome. He, along with Brennan, informed Congress that any supposed hacking activity failed to influence the election significantly.
Declassified reports further unveil that officials from the Obama administration had allegedly leaked false information to the media. Then-President Obama held a meeting on Jan. 5, 2017, in the Oval Office with a number of high-ranking officials such as James Comey, Susan Rice, John Brennan, James Clapper and Joe Biden. According to the report, Comey had suggested to Obama that the details about Russia ought to be withheld from the incoming Trump administration.
