Television network CBS was found guilty of a dubious editorial practice lately, where it chose to manipulate the words of DHS Chief Kristi Noem. They conveniently erased significant details about Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a person of interest due to his worrisome criminal record that involved being a member of the MS-13 gang, domestic violence, and child exploitation.
Garcia was recognized by a federal grand jury in Tennessee as being culpable for ‘transporting undocumented immigrants across the United States.’ He faced a severe indictment that contained one count of a conspiracy to transport aliens, and one count of illicit transportation of undocumented aliens.
The law had decided against him, and it was resolved that Garcia would be deported to Uganda, an East African country. The judgment came post his release from Tennessee prison, as his criminal acts were deemed incompatible with human society and values of the United States.
However, in a development that baffled many law-abiding citizens, a judge who owes his appointment to former President Obama opposed the immediate deportation of Garcia. The decision has raised eyebrows and led to conjecture about the motives behind such a move.
On CBS’s dialogue platform ‘Face the Nation’, DHS Chief Kristi Noem spoke extensively about the Trump Administration’s inviolable commitment to protecting Americans. This included intensive efforts to apprehend and deport dangerous individuals like Garcia. However, CBS decided to play a selective game with her words and cut her off while narrating Garcia’s criminal record.
During the broadcast, viewers only heard Noem saying, ‘…the one thing that we will continue to do is make sure that Garcia does not wander freely in the United States of America’. CBS chose to omit the powerful remainder of her statement, exercising an agenda-driven bias.
In the unaired clip retrieved later, Noem spoke plainly about Garcia’s dangerous character, ‘This individual was a known human trafficker, MS-13 gang member, a domestic abuser and someone so depraved that he demanded explicit photos from minors. Even his human-trafficking accomplices were disgusted by his actions. His malicious treatment of children was abhorrent. He has no place here in United States, and we are doing everything possible to bring him to justice.’
It appears, however, such clear voices revealing bitter truths do not fit well within the narrative CBS desires to maintain, and hence they chose to sweep these alarming facts under the carpet, thus leveraging the power of omission for their cause.
In a separate event that raised questions about the channel’s integrity, Paramount and CBS were compelled to shell out millions in damages to President Trump. They were forced to modify their editorial policies in light of a settlement agreement that marked a significant embarrassment for their operational conduct.
It was revealed that President Trump had brought forth a staggering lawsuit worth $20 billion against Paramount, the network’s parent company. The lawsuit was a result of deceptive editing employed during a ’60 Minutes’ coverage featuring Kamala Harris.
The supposed ’60 Minutes’ segment aimed to portray Kamala Harris in a competent light, magically transforming her puzzling responses into sharp, articulate ones. It looks like CBS was more interested in creating a certain image of the vice president rather than providing an accurate portrayal of her abilities.
The egregious manipulation performed by ’60 Minutes’ went to the extent of replacing Kamala’s nonsensical responses with a cleverly chosen sentence from an earlier part of the interview. Thus, the viewers were misled into believing she was competent and coherent while answering questions.
This incident, along with the deceptive trimming of Noem’s comments on CBS’s show, introduces serious doubts about the impartiality and trustworthiness of the media network. Both instances demonstrate a clear tendency to represent facts in a way that suits their narrative, rather than portraying the truth as it is.
Do such instances of blatant misinformation and manipulation undermine the credibility of our news sources? Does it create an echo chamber that only bounces views they want the public to hear? These are questions that viewers and citizens must think about, given the crucial role media plays in shaping public opinion.
It becomes even more alarming when we consider that the truth, in this case, was deliberately twisted to protect ill-suited individuals from being held accountable. By failing to report the facts, the news station has perpetuated false narratives for their targeted viewer base.
In conclusion, the need for an unbiased, truth-seeking media has never been more critical. Media houses should prioritize the truth above all and play their role in making our society more informed and accountable. Such deceptive practices must be called out and a thorough re-examination of ethics and standards in journalism is needed.
