Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson used his Labor Day rally speech to rail against President Donald Trump and mobilize organized labor to block potential federal efforts to restore order in his crime-plagued city—just days after another bloody weekend left at least 52 people shot and seven dead.
Trump had signaled in late August that Chicago would be next after federal action in Washington, D.C., to combat rampant crime and cartel activity. “I think Chicago will be our next. … And then we’ll help with New York,” Trump said. Days later, reports emerged that the Pentagon had been quietly preparing a military deployment to the Windy City.
The former president doubled down on August 26, calling the Democrat-run city a “hellhole.” The White House has since floated emergency support for cities plagued by spiraling violence and drug trafficking.
Johnson Unleashes Labor Rhetoric
Instead of addressing the bloodshed, Mayor Johnson turned his rally speech into a full-throated attack on President Trump and a call for organized labor to “defend” the city against any federal assistance.
“No federal troops in the city of Chicago!” Johnson shouted. “No militarized force… We’re going to defend our democracy… We got the baddest freaking labor movement in the city of Chicago, birthed right here.”
Johnson then made a sweeping promise: “We’re gonna take this fight across America, but we gotta defend our home front first.”
DEI, Class Warfare, And Historical Rewrites
Rather than speak to the record-setting crime wave under his leadership—including 572 homicides in 2024, making Chicago the deadliest city in America for the 13th straight year—Johnson touted far-left labor wins and DEI initiatives, citing sub-minimum wage abolition and teachers’ contracts that cater to identity politics.
“This is the labor movement, you all,” Johnson said. “A teachers’ contract that protects black women… LGBTQ community… immigrants. This is the greatest freaking city in the world.”
He then falsely claimed the land was “built by slaves, indigenous people, and workers,” urging the crowd to “defend this land” and claiming labor unions would somehow “stitch back together” the Constitution if Trump “continues to break it.”
“This is a city that said ‘Keep hope alive,’ that birthed ‘Yes we can,’ and the city that will defend this country,” he said.
Trump Fires Back
President Trump, responding on Truth Social, didn’t hold back:
“At least 54 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, 8 people were killed. The last two weekends were similar. Chicago is the worst and most dangerous city in the World, by far… I will solve the crime problem fast, just like I did in DC. Chicago will be safe again, and soon. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
He added:
“CHICAGO IS THE MURDER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!”
A Tale Of Two Visions
While Trump pushes federal action to crush crime, clean up inner cities, and restore order, Johnson seems more interested in defending chaos and wrapping his city’s misery in union slogans and progressive buzzwords.
With crime spiraling, the people of Chicago may soon face a choice: more slogans, or actual safety.
