Five Young Suspects Charged with Murder Following Bronx Drive-by

Charges of murder were placed on five young suspects, the majority of whom were teenagers, in relation to a vicious drive-by shooting on Labor Day. This horrific event resulted in one fatality and left four others critically injured adjacent to a notorious marijuana hotspot in the Bronx, as stated by law enforcement and related sources.

It was noted that the arrested individuals included Heron Martin, aged 21; Shamir Murray, 19; Kai Oulai, 19; Jose Gomez, 18; and a minor aged 16, whose identity has remained confidential owing to his age. This group was implicated in the lethal assault on 24-year-old Jamari Henry, which took place outside a shop on Allerton Avenue.

In addition to murder, the group was also slapped with charges of attempted murder, illicit possession of a firearm, and reckless endangerment. Law enforcement confirmed these charges, further clarifying their association with the rapid gunfire that put four additional men in critical condition. The injured, a couple of 27-year-olds, a 25-year-old, and a 21-year-old, thankfully suffered non-fatal injuries.

A stolen gray Honda Accord became the focal point of this catastrophe around 7:30 p.m. The car, with the assailants inside, pulled up to a well-known marijuana hotspot. Sources in law enforcement detailed this sequence of the crime.

The sequence turned fatal when two armed culprits exited their vehicle and unleashed a hail of bullets, resulting in five total casualties, one of which was fatally wounded, that of Henry. Eyewitness accounts and law enforcement sources shed light on these grisly details.

Law enforcement in close proximity attempted to intercept the suspects in their escape vehicle. However, the panicked escape led the vehicle crashing into a Honda Odyssey approximately half a mile from the original crime scene, at an intersection of Arnow and Hone avenues. Pertinent details were confirmed by both police and additional sources.

Following the crash, one of the suspects, Gomez, was seriously hurt and required immediate hospitalization, as informed by local police. While initial speculation pointed to gang involvement in the shooting, law enforcement were unable to corroborate this detail or the underlying motives prompting such brutal violence.

This incident was underscored as part of an ongoing escalation in gun violence across the Bronx that has persisted for several days. Another event that contributed to this surge included a fatal event involving the arrest of a young shooter, as police reported.

In this separate but equally tragic incident, a 15-year-old boy, already known to authorities due to past transgressions, was apprehended following the shooting death of Kelvin Mosquea. The unfortunate incident occurred during an alleged botched robbery attempt outside of the NYCHA’s Sack Wern Houses.

Furthermore, a violent encounter at a local basketball tournament culminated in the fatal shooting of a 32-year-old man, identified as Jaceil Banks. The same incident left three individuals seriously wounded and a 17-year-old girl battling for her life after being hit by a stray bullet, causing severe facial damage.

In relation to the shooting at the basketball event, a group composed of individuals aged 16, 17, 20, and 25 were apprehended. Again, the possibility of gang involvement was explored, indicated by sources familiar with the investigation.

Recent data provided by the NYPD highlighted that in the previous month, the Bronx experienced a decrease in gun-related incidents. The figures showed 27 incidents, compared to 34 reported in August 2024.

Similarly, the number of shooting victims also saw a dip, from 49 victims in August 2024 to 44 for the same time span this year. The overall narrative, however, remained rather grim due to persisting violent incidents.

A cumulative review of the shooting incidents recorded in the first eight months of the year showcased a decline as well, standing at 186 incidents with 228 victims. In contrast, during the same period in 2024, the recorded incidents and victims were significantly higher, totaling 224 and 285, respectively.

Despite such statistical improvements, the random outbursts of violent shootings throughout the borough remain deeply concerning. As additional details emerge from unfolding investigations, the Bronx community continues to grapple with the aftermath of these tragic events.
