Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, triggered a social media storm after delivering an astounding rebuttal to a famous Sunday morning television talk show host. He made an appearance at NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ to discuss the state of the job market and the impact of trade tariffs.
The segment began with host Kristen Welker imprudently challenging President Trump’s economic accomplishments, by juxtaposing them with the alleged failures during Joe Biden’s term. However, the ever-prepared Bessent had a keen retort that seemingly highlighted the Biden administration’s misplaced priorities.
Bessent argued that thriving individuals under the Biden administration were largely those not abiding by immigration laws. ‘The new jobs,’ he answered, ‘are going to either native-born or legal Americans. It is mostly illegal immigrants who have benefitted from job creation under Biden’s misguided administration!’
His rebuttal effectively accentuated the pernicious reality of the Biden administration, favoring those who have circumvented the law over hardworking, native-born or law-abiding immigrants. It’s needless to say, such favoritism has stirred a cacophony of disapproval among patriots.
Welker, however, persisted on the economy matter by quoting Fortune 500 companies like Goldman Sachs. Despite her efforts, Bessent did not flinch and swatted her arguments with an unforgettable response regarding his successful business experiences with Goldman Sachs.
In an attempt to intimidate and reprimand, Welker quote dropped ‘Goldman Sachs says 86% of the tariff revenue collected so far has been paid by American businesses and consumers. So, just bottom line, Mr. Secretary, do you acknowledge that these tariffs are a tax on American consumers?’
Without any hint of yielding to Welker’s efforts, Bessent countered ‘No, I don’t. Even though you have companies saying they are going to have to increase prices, and given the fact that 86% of these tariffs so far have been paid by Americans?’
Remaining steadfast, he mocked, ‘No, no, no. You’re quoting Goldman Sachs. Let’s not forget, I made a favorable and prosperous career trading against them.’ His statement left an underlying hint, reminding her about the hypocrisy of corporate entities like Goldman Sachs.
‘Hasbro says they’re going to have to increase their prices,’ she added, hoping to corner Bessent, who merely smiled at the futile attempt. He promptly responded, ‘Kristen, if things are so bad, why was the GDP 3.3%? Why is the stock market at a new high? You’re quoting major corporations, but the stock market index, the S&P, is at an unprecedented high.’
Amid the fuss surrounding tariffs, the unwelcome reality of the strong GDP and booming market was clearly upsetting for critics of the administration, who recklessly sought to discredit any accomplishments. It’s as if they’d rather see the nation fail than acknowledge any success.
