In an era of heightened polarization, communities throughout the greater Chicago area are uniting in resistance to the imminent intervention from the Trump administration. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently put into action ‘Operation Midway Blitz’. Its purpose, as declared by the Trump administration, is to identify, detain, and ultimately deport the numerous immigrant community members living in the city after weeks of warnings of potential intervention in Chicago.
The Trump administration has consistently wielded criminal activity as a guise to promote its stance against immigration. This operation, the officials assert, is dedicated to an Illinois resident, Katie Abraham, who tragically lost her life in a vehicular accident about 100 miles away from Chicago. The alleged perpetrator was an undocumented individual, which authorities are using to justify their operation.
The DHS communicated, ‘This ICE operation will zone in on the criminal illegal aliens who have taken refuge in Chicago and Illinois, knowing well that Governor Pritzker’s sanctuary policies would shield them, allowing them to freely move around on American soil.’ This was followed by criticism of Governor Pritzker, accusing him of siding with ‘criminal illegal aliens’ over their victims, and assuring the public that President Trump and Secretary Noem instead stand by the victims.
The DHS remained vague regarding the specifics of Operation Midway Blitz, with only news outlets and additional statements from officials shedding light on it. Prior to the DHS officially announcing the operation, an odd social media post by Trump drew parallels to the 1979 film Apocalypse Now, coming off as a veiled threat to declare war on Chicago. This was later dismissed by Trump as an attempt to ‘clean up’ the city rather than wage war against it.
Chicago’s elected officials, community champions, and everyday citizens have strongly rebuffed Trump’s attacks on their city, pointing to the substantial decrease in crime rates over recent years. Mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson said, ‘We remain firmly against any potential militarized immigration enforcement lacking due process, given ICE’s history of detaining and deporting American citizens and infringing upon the human rights of countless detainees.’
Mayor Johnson further elaborated on the numerous reported incidents of abuse in detention centers since the start of the Trump administration, with over 500 documented cases, some of which include deaths of detainees and alleged sexual abuse of minors by federal immigration agents. He also raised concerns about the absence of preliminary notice to the city about the planned operation.
Adding his voice to the dissent, Illinois Governor, JB Pritzker criticized the operation, saying it was not about combating crime but instead aimed at inciting fear among Illinoisans. Persistent in their defiance, several community members and local leaders have been organizing protests, press conferences, and meetings with the intention of safeguarding their city from federal agents or possible military deployment.
Ed Yohnka, spokesperson for ACLU of Illinois, told Truthout via email that there’s no real emergency, in his view, that justifies these severe and destabilizing measures. He suggested that the administration’s authoritarian tendencies and its desire to attack dissenting communities form the real basis of such operations.
Residents of the community have reported earlier occurrences of abductions. WGN News reported one case of a local flower vendor’s arrest, captured on surveillance video, by individuals believed to be federal agents wearing bulletproof vests, with one sporting a pin shaped like Donald Trump.
Illinois Representative, Jesus ‘Chuy’ Garcia expressed his dissatisfaction about what he sees as racial profiling, ‘They didn’t have judicial approval to come and seize someone who sells flowers’, he told WGN News. There is a wide-reaching consensus that these arrests contributed to the atmosphere of fear and tension in the community.
The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) in a communications message by Brandon Lee, condemned the increase in raids in Chicago, describing actions as the Trump administration’s terror campaign against the city and its inhabitants.
He emphasized ICIRR’s dedication towards ensuring community members in Illinois are aware of their rights and have knowledge of resources at their disposal. One such resource is the Family Support Hotline at 855-435-7693. The hotline invites tip-offs regarding ICE presence, and helps families whose members have been detained.
Lee stated, ‘Regardless of any attempts to present this as a limited operation, Trump’s assaults are wide-ranging, aimed at targeting all immigrants — from senior citizens in Albany Park, to flower vendors on Archer Avenue.’ He further stressed unity and resilience among citizens across Chicagoland, in their resolve to resist against what they perceive as hostile invasion, while devoting themselves to the care and protection of their neighbors.
