Trump Demands Death Penalty for Killer of Ukrainian Refugee

President Donald Trump is calling for swift justice—and the death penalty—for the man accused of brutally stabbing a Ukrainian refugee to death on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“The ANIMAL who so violently killed the beautiful young lady from Ukraine, who came to America searching for peace and safety, should be given a ‘Quick’ (there is no doubt!) Trial, and only awarded THE DEATH PENALTY,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Wednesday. “There can be no other option!!!”

A Brutal Killing on Public Transit

The victim, 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska, was riding a Lynx Blue Line train on August 22 when she was stabbed repeatedly in a horrifying attack captured on surveillance footage. Prosecutors say the assailant used what appeared to be a pocket knife and continued the attack even as passengers fled in panic.

The suspect, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., was arrested and initially charged with first-degree murder under North Carolina state law. On Tuesday, federal prosecutors filed an additional charge: committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system—a federal offense that can carry the death penalty.

Trump’s Zero Tolerance for Violence

Trump’s call for capital punishment aligns with his ongoing push to restore law and order nationwide, especially in Democrat-run cities where crime has surged. In recent months, he has repeatedly demanded harsher penalties for violent criminals and called on federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in especially heinous cases.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Trump had spoken directly with Attorney General Pam Bondi about the case. Bondi vowed in a statement to “seek the maximum penalty for this unforgivable crime” and promised the suspect “will never again see the light of day as a free man.”

Zarutska’s Story: A Search for Safety Ends in Horror

Zarutska fled Ukraine’s war zone last year and had recently resettled in the United States. Her journey to escape violence ended tragically in the very place she hoped would bring peace and stability.

The story has sparked outrage nationwide and renewed attention on crimes targeting women and refugees in urban transit systems. Trump, who has made public safety a key theme of his second term, said Zarutska’s death should never have happened—and that it must not go unpunished.

“This is not who we are as a nation,” Trump said privately, according to a White House official. “We’re going to stop this madness.”
