In a sobering event in Queens, a serial lawbreaker shockingly confessed to annihilating a senior duo in their own residence. Suspect Jamel McGriff confidently came clean about the heinous act, even as his assertions took a puzzling turn with him declaring that he also assaulted his victims. ‘I acknowledge my crime, I ended their lives,’ McGriff pronounced to officers post his capture on Wednesday, the prosecutors reported.
His chilling disclosure was recorded on body-worn camera footage when he was eventually apprehended, following two days of evading arrest after he is believed to have tortured Frank and Maureen Olton in their Bellerose dwelling. Following the repugnant crime, he reportedly used their financial resources to indulge in retail therapy. The horrific case revelead few more shocking details, including the revelation that Maureen Olton, aged 77, was still breathing when their house was torched allegedly by McGriff.
Officers discovered Maureen’s charred remains, which were beyond recognition due to severe burn injuries. Assistant District Attorney John Esposito informed the court that the elderly woman had suffered thermal burns in addition to a fractured larynx, possibly indicating strangulation, and soot was discovered in her windpipe. Frank Olton, her 76-year-old partner, had been secured to a basement pole prior to being repeatedly pierced with a sharp weapon, marking his end.
Prosecutors maintain that McGriff set the deceased man’s torso on fire before igniting the entire place. The offender, believed to have remained within the property for approximately five hours, allegedly proceeded to Macy’s afterwards to purchase clothing worth $500 using the couple’s credit card. The suspect also signed up for a bonus card under his own name during this shopping spree.
Moreover, he exchanged two of the victims’ mobile phones for cash, a fact shared by Esposito. McGriff was also reported to have viewed ‘Light of the World’, a 2-D animated narrative of Jesus Christ, financed by the couple’s money. The law enforcement used surveillance footage from the movie theater to locate the suspect in Times Square, successfully detaining him later that day.
Law enforcement further stated that the ruthless murder seemed to be ‘unprovoked’, as CCTV footage of the incident captured the moment when the alleged offender noticed Frank working in his yard and with his vehicle around 10 a.m. that fateful Monday. Authorities disclosed McGriff had earlier approached other houses in the vicinity, disguising his intent behind the need for a phone charger, but was turned away by the locals.
Even Frank dismissed McGriff’s request, however, authorities believe that the registered sex criminal pursued him, forcefully gaining access to the house through the backdoor. As per the evidence, Frank was recorded confronting the intruder, insisting him to leave the premises. The suspect didn’t vacate the victims’ place for the next few hours, as reported by the prosecutors.
McGriff, whose criminal portfolio includes 11 previous charges, is a four-time convict for violent crimes. Following his discharge from imprisonment in 2023, he was on parole, having been locked away for 17 years out of the 20-year punishment for armed theft and sex offenses. About a year since his release, crime enforcement agencies received an alert from the NYPD about his failure to update his residence on the sex offender registry, as necessitated by law in 2024.
Rather than facing repercussions for regularization violations, double murder suspect McGriff remained free. The culmination of his criminal spree ended not with a transgression penalty, but with charges for the alarming twin homicides. McGriff, following his arrest, was detained without any bail on a total of 18 different charges.
His alleged crimes span murder, theft, break-in, abduction, arson, and identity theft, all in connection to the gruesome killings. However, he currently faces no charges related to sexual crimes. Following the grim proceedings, his next court appearance was scheduled for the upcoming week.
