Bronx Assailant Arrested: Police’s Diligent Work Leads to Closure

The individual accused of assaulting a young adult on a park bench in the Bronx this week, has been apprehended, thanks to the diligent work of the police force. The alleged attacker, Xavier Chapman, was reported to be indecently exposed as he aggressively approached the 19-year-old victim sitting at Belmont, near Park Avenue and East 183rd Street, early Wednesday morning. It is reported that Chapman, had no prior acquaintance with the victim and proceeded to force himself on her. He escaped the situation only after the victim raised an alarm and managed to push him away.

In their continuous search for the attacker, the New York Police Department issued footage the following day. The suspect was seen strolling down the pavement, entirely covered in dark clothing with his hood covering his face. This covert video footage turned out to be instrumental for the vigilantes from the NYPD’s Warrants division, aiding them in tracing Chapman through a ‘meticulous video survey’. He is currently facing charges for sexual assault, violation, and annoyance.

Chapman was previously entangled with the law for a single offensive act wherein he was seen to grossly expose himself while engaging in self-pleasure at the entrance of a local apartment in Bronx this previous April, as per the criminal charges levied. In that particular case, he was penalized with charges of indecency in a public space, and annoyance. He was handed a desk-appearance ticket.

In response to the charges posed to Chapman in the month of May, he maintained an absolute non-guilty plea. The case underwent postponement in July, leading up to the contemplation stage, forecasting an indicative dismissal. Significantly, the more recent crime involving Chapman occurred just a day after a similar incident involving an individual known as Nicholas Dejesus.

The 42-year-old Dejesus is suspected of violently attacking and assaulting a 33-year-old woman, a stranger similarly, in the vicinity of Broadway near West 230th Street, specifically in Kingsbridge within the Bronx. His arrest was executed no more than twelve hours post the alleged attack. As a parolee convicted earlier for theft, Dejesus now faces charges of harassment, assault and sexual violation.

Following the trend of alarming incidents, the data released by the NYPD suggests that assaults of this sort in the Bronx have seen an increase of 27.5% so far this year. The number of such occurrences reported were 380, a notable increase from the 298 incidents reported for the same duration in 2024.

On a broad level encompassing the city, the statistics resonate a similar trend of increase in sexual assaults. The metropolitan area of the five boroughs reported an alarming total of 1,484 incidents of assaults of this nature, marking a substantial increase of roughly 21 percent from the previous year’s total of 1,182 for the exact same period.

Attempting to provide an explanation for the sharp increase, the NYPD attributed part of the rise to specific ‘legislative amendments’. These alterations to the law have resulted in the enlargement of the legal definition of sexual violation, encapsulating ‘added forms of sexual misdemeanors’.
