A mobile billboard rolled through New York City this week, mocking Governor Kathy Hochul for embracing nuclear energy while climate activists swarm the city for “Climate Week.”
Photos of the vehicle, obtained by The Daily Wire, show Hochul wearing a red hat styled like Trump’s iconic “MAGA” cap — except hers reads: “Make Nuclear Great Again.” The billboard highlights her recent pledge to support a new zero-emission nuclear power plant, calling it a “model of 21st century nuclear design.”
The digital ad campaign, which will run through Wednesday, underscores growing tension between Hochul and her former environmentalist allies, who have long opposed nuclear energy in favor of wind and solar.
Environmental Left Turns On Hochul
Despite once earning praise from groups like the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, and the Natural Resource Defense Council for measures like the “Climate Superfund” and crypto mining bans, Hochul is now facing backlash.
Greenpeace, which calls nuclear power “dirty, expensive, and dangerous,” has blasted the shift. The Sierra Club remains “unequivocally opposed to nuclear,” while Public Power NY accused Hochul of basing her latest move on “promises from Donald Trump.”
That may not be far off. President Trump, in a recent executive order, vowed to modernize U.S. nuclear energy policy, streamline regulation, and make nuclear part of his national security agenda. Just days later, Hochul directed the New York Power Authority to begin developing a new plant.
Hochul Embraces Trump’s Energy Playbook
While Hochul has tried to frame the plant as a cutting-edge climate initiative, critics say she’s adopting Trump-era policies to save her sagging approval ratings.
Her support among New Yorkers has dropped below 50%, and climate activists say the nuclear pivot shows she’s “unserious about New Yorkers’ energy bills and climate future.”
Meanwhile, Trump used his speech at the UN to slam wind and solar as “pathetic” and “expensive,” while pledging to help any country that wants affordable American energy.
As climate activists rally in Manhattan this week, they’ll be forced to see Hochul’s face plastered on a truck — wearing a MAGA hat and embracing a policy that her own base loathes.
