President Donald Trump said Friday he believes Hamas is “ready for a lasting PEACE,” after the terror group signaled it would release all remaining hostages under his proposed deal. The president also urged Israel to halt its military strikes on Gaza to ensure the safe transfer of hostages.
“Based on the Statement just issued by Hamas, I believe they are ready for a lasting PEACE. Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the Hostages out safely and quickly!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Right now, it’s far too dangerous to do that. We are already in discussions on details to be worked out. This is not about Gaza alone, this is about long sought PEACE in the Middle East.”
Hamas released its own statement Friday afternoon, agreeing to free the hostages and hand Gaza’s administration over to an independent Palestinian body. The group stopped short of agreeing to disarm, however — a key requirement in Trump’s 20-point peace plan that was backed earlier this week by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to the proposal, Hamas would release the hostages in exchange for Israel turning over “250 life sentence prisoners plus 1,700 Gazans who were detained after October 7th 2023, including all women and children detained in that context.” Hamas said it was prepared to negotiate the details “through mediators,” while praising Trump’s efforts to halt the war, facilitate prisoner exchanges, allow aid into Gaza, and reject displacement of Palestinians.
Middle Eastern countries, including Egypt and Qatar, welcomed Trump’s push to end the conflict. Still, without Hamas committing to disarmament and other terms, Israel may refuse to proceed with mass prisoner releases.
Trump has given Hamas a deadline to accept the full deal: by Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. ET, or face what he described as “all HELL, like no one has ever seen before.”
