Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Wednesday compared Antifa to some of the world’s most dangerous terrorist organizations, saying the far-left anarchist network is “just as sophisticated” as Hamas, ISIS, MS-13, and Hezbollah. Noem made the remarks during a White House roundtable led by President Donald Trump focused on federal efforts to combat Antifa-related violence.
“This network of Antifa is just as sophisticated as MS-13, as Tren de Aragua, as ISIS, as Hezbollah, as Hamas, as all of them,” Noem said. “They are just as dangerous. They have an agenda to destroy us, just like the other terrorists we’ve dealt with.”
Noem recently visited Portland, Oregon, where she observed anti-ICE demonstrators from a rooftop. That city has been a frequent hotspot for Antifa-related unrest in recent years.
Trump previously declared Antifa a domestic terrorist organization on September 22 and has floated the idea of labeling it a foreign terrorist group as well. At the roundtable, Attorney General Pam Bondi promised a sweeping dismantling of the group.
“We’re going to take them apart,” Bondi said. “Thanks to your bold leadership and the designation of Antifa as a terrorist organization… Americans will no longer tolerate their unhinged violence.”
While Bondi did not name specific leaders, officials acknowledged Antifa’s decentralized nature, with autonomous cells in multiple cities. Trump voiced support for the foreign terrorist designation and agreed with one attendee’s claim that Antifa agitators disguised themselves as Trump supporters during the January 6 Capitol riot.
Conservative journalists and influencers present at the panel, including Andy Ngo, Julio Rosas, and Brandi Kruse, detailed the challenges of prosecuting members of a leaderless movement. Ngo emphasized that Antifa operates through deception and loose organization, making law enforcement’s job more difficult.
Rosas pushed back on the idea that Antifa’s structure prevents accountability, stating that authorities routinely pursue criminal groups without formal leadership.
“These people don’t just show up randomly at the same time to do the same thing, dressed in very similar fashion, espousing the same ideology,” Rosas said.
Kruse argued that federal prosecutors should focus on individual acts of violence regardless of ideology.
“At the end of the day, when you look at behavior, you prosecute behavior,” she said. “Whether you can prove that this amorphous thing is Antifa… it doesn’t matter. Did they assault someone? Were they engaged in rioting?”
The Trump administration continues to ramp up pressure on Antifa following a wave of political violence over the past few years, asserting that national security tools are warranted to stop domestic anarchist threats.
