Russian President Vladimir Putin offered rare praise for President Donald Trump during a summit in Tajikistan on Friday, applauding Trump’s ongoing efforts to broker peace in some of the world’s most entrenched conflicts.
“He’s really doing a lot to resolve such complex crises that have lasted for years and even decades,” Putin said during remarks in Dushanbe, where he was meeting with leaders of several former Soviet republics.
Putin specifically highlighted Trump’s role in securing the cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, part of a broader post-war realignment in the Middle East orchestrated by the Trump administration.
The Russian leader made the comments in response to a question about the Nobel Peace Prize, which was awarded earlier in the day to Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado. Putin was blunt in his assessment of the Nobel committee’s credibility.
“There have been cases where the committee has awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to people who have done nothing for peace,” he said. “A person comes — good or bad — and [gets it] in a month, in two months — boom. For what? He didn’t do anything at all.”
Putin went on to suggest that the committee has severely undermined the prize’s reputation. “These decisions have done enormous damage to the prestige of this prize,” he added.
Trump himself has previously noted the irony of being snubbed for the award despite overseeing peace deals across multiple regions. Speaking to top U.S. military brass in Quantico last month, he quipped, “If this works out, we’ll have eight — eight in eight months. That’s pretty good. Nobody’s ever done that.”
He added with trademark sarcasm, “Will you get the Nobel Prize? Absolutely not. They’ll give it to some guy that didn’t do a damn thing. They’ll give it to the guy who wrote a book about the mind of Donald Trump and what it took to solve the wars. The Nobel Prize will go to a writer.”
Trump’s latest round of peace negotiations, including the landmark truce between Israel and Hamas, have drawn measured optimism from leaders around the world — and sharp contrast with years of failed diplomacy under previous administrations.
