Benny Johnson Slams Democrats After DOJ Arrests Man Who Threatened His Assassination

Conservative commentator Benny Johnson blasted Democrats for “mainstreaming political violence” after the Department of Justice arrested a California man accused of sending him a chilling letter that described, in graphic detail, how Johnson would be murdered.

Federal prosecutors say George Russell Isbell Jr. was arrested and charged this week after mailing the threat to Johnson’s home, where he lives with his wife and four young children. The letter was sent just days after the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was Johnson’s close friend and former colleague. Johnson founded TPUSA Productions in 2018.

At a press conference Friday alongside Attorney General Pam Bondi, Johnson said the suspect targeted him for being a “white, male, Christian Trump supporter.”

“They described in great detail how I’d be killed in an open field, just like Charlie — how much blood would come out of my head and neck when it was blown off,” Johnson said. “This individual described orphaning my children and widowing my wife, with great joy.”

Johnson said the threat wasn’t an isolated act of extremism but part of a broader cultural problem encouraged by the political left. “Violence has been mainstreamed by the Democratic Party,” he warned. “It is not ‘extremist,’ it is mainstream. And we need a moment of reckoning here. This has to stop. This cycle must end. Is any Democrat courageous enough to disavow violence?”

He drew a direct comparison to the scandal involving Virginia Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones, who was exposed for sending text messages fantasizing about “two bullets to the head” of a Republican lawmaker and wishing death on the official’s children. “Are my four innocent, beautiful little children ‘little fascists’?” Johnson asked. “Because that’s what these people are calling for — the murder of people they disagree with politically.”

Johnson’s wife, Kate, also called on California Governor Gavin Newsom to denounce the man who threatened her family. “Hey Gavin Newsom — the man who threatened to kill my husband and harm my four small children is a resident of your state,” she wrote on X. “Are you going to disavow him? Or is this okay with you?”

Bondi, who has been overseeing the Justice Department’s new initiative to protect public figures from politically motivated threats, condemned the attack. “Benny is a well-known media personality carrying a message very similar to Charlie’s — one grounded in faith and love of country,” she said. “Just days after Charlie’s assassination, Benny received a letter at his home. The author made it very clear he hated Benny because of his views and wanted him dead. This was a coward hiding behind a keyboard who thought he could get away with it.”

According to court documents, the letter was mailed on September 18 — just over a week after Kirk’s murder — and explicitly referenced the slain activist. “Maybe someone will blow your head off!!! We can hope!” the letter read. “Planning any public engagements? Love to see your head explode and your blood stain the concrete red.”

Isbell faces up to five years in federal prison if convicted.
