In an unexpected but widely welcomed development, Border Patrol agents will receive paychecks despite the ongoing Democrat-led government shutdown, according to agency sources and a message from the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC).
“This is unprecedented and is due to the hard work of all federal law enforcement officers and the continued support of President Trump and his administration,” NBPC President Paul Perez stated in a union email shared with The Daily Wire.
Agents will not only be paid for current duties but are also expected to receive back pay for the duration of the shutdown, which entered its 16th day on Thursday. According to the union, they “may receive ‘accelerated’ pay” for upcoming work as well, providing some financial cushion in a time of legislative gridlock.
This unusual step follows mounting frustration across the nation as Democrats in Congress continue to block efforts to fund the government. Republican lawmakers have insisted that the government be reopened first, while Democrats remain fixated on unrelated healthcare demands.
While previous administrations allowed law enforcement paychecks to lapse during shutdowns, the Trump administration’s decision to prioritize pay for agents on the front lines underscores its broader America First approach to national security.
Border Patrol agents, already operating under high-stress conditions, expressed relief at the news. Many are currently assigned not only to traditional border zones but also deployed to major cities like Chicago as part of President Trump’s expanded immigration enforcement strategy.
In Chicago, Border Patrol teams are facing increasing danger. According to the Department of Homeland Security, agents have been targeted by local gangs and Mexican cartel affiliates who have allegedly placed bounties of up to $50,000 on their heads.
“It’s a huge boost for us that this government has our backs, especially after all the stress the last administration put us through,” said one Border Patrol agent. “We have been through shutdowns before, and we still come to work with pride, but I’m thankful to know we don’t have to deal with the stress of wondering how long it will be until we get paid again.”
Another agent, referencing protests and violent encounters in the field, said, “Getting pelted with rocks by Antifa really sucks, but it’s probably even worse when you’re not getting paid.”
This move sends a clear message: the Trump administration is standing firmly with federal law enforcement, even as political paralysis continues in Washington. And for the thousands of agents protecting the border and American cities, that support is more than just symbolic—it’s life-changing.
