Glenn Youngkin Rips Into Jay Jones After Election: ‘I Am Incredibly Concerned’

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin didn’t hold back Wednesday after Democratic Attorney General-elect Jay Jones secured a controversial victory despite being dogged by a years-old scandal involving disturbing text messages.

“I am incredibly concerned about the Attorney General-elect’s ability to do the job based on the texts that he sent,” Youngkin posted on X. “They were abhorrent, and I think that they, once again, reiterate that you can’t come into this job if you are espousing death on a political enemy, the death of children, and the death of law enforcement.”

The scandal stems from leaked text messages Jones allegedly sent three years ago, in which he fantasized about the assassination of then-House Speaker Todd Gilbert, a Republican, and suggested Gilbert and his wife should be forced to witness the death of their own child.

Youngkin called the messages “disqualifying,” slamming what he views as a growing normalization of political violence.

“My position has not changed,” he added. “There is absolutely no excuse for what he wrote. None. And we live in a society today that I think has lost its way — at least some folks have — on their willingness to almost accept violence and political violence as a solution.”

The Republican governor, who will soon be succeeded by Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger, warned that Jones’ victory presents a challenge for law enforcement and families across Virginia.

“They’re going to have to make sure that parents with children feel safe,” Youngkin said. “And that’s going to be a challenge going forward.”

Spanberger previously condemned Jones’ comments but refused to demand he drop out of the race. Her silence in the closing stretch of the campaign came under fire from Republicans, including outgoing GOP gubernatorial nominee Winsome Earle-Sears, who lost her bid Tuesday.

Despite the controversy, Jones prevailed at the ballot box — a result Youngkin called troubling and dangerous for the state’s future.
