President Donald Trump said Wednesday that eliminating the Senate filibuster would supercharge the Republican agenda and make it nearly impossible for Democrats to regain control of the chamber.
Speaking to Fox News host Bret Baier, Trump renewed his push to scrap the rule requiring 60 votes to pass most legislation, arguing that doing so would allow the GOP to deliver “so many good things” that Americans would reward them at the ballot box for years to come.
“I think that if we got rid of the filibuster, we would approve so many good things, common sense things, wonderful things that it would be hard to beat us,” Trump said. “If we don’t, it’s always going to be a slog.”
He emphasized that even though some Senate Republicans are hesitant to make such a change, he believes it’s the only way forward. “I have no doubt in my mind, get rid of it,” he said.
The push to eliminate the filibuster comes as the government shutdown drags into its sixth week. Senate Democrats have repeatedly blocked GOP-led continuing resolutions that would temporarily fund the government at current levels while negotiations continue. Democratic leadership has insisted the shutdown is necessary to force action on expiring healthcare subsidies tied to the Affordable Care Act.
Republicans have tried more than a dozen times to pass temporary funding bills, but each attempt has been stonewalled by Senate Democrats, keeping the shutdown in place and pushing federal workers to the brink.
Trump argues the filibuster is not only hampering negotiations now but will also lead to political consequences later. On Tuesday, he warned that failing to eliminate the rule would severely damage Republican chances in the next election.
“The Democrats are far more likely to win the Midterms, and the next Presidential Election, if we don’t do the Termination of the Filibuster (The Nuclear Option!), because it will be impossible for Republicans to get Common Sense Policies done with these Crazed Democrat Lunatics being able to block everything by withholding their votes,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “FOR THREE YEARS, NOTHING WILL BE PASSED, AND REPUBLICANS WILL BE BLAMED. Elections, including the Midterms, will be rightfully brutal.”
Trump’s call to end the filibuster reflects growing frustration within the Republican base over legislative gridlock and the belief that Democrats are using the rule to stall progress on core conservative priorities.
