Trump Urges Senate to Scrap Obamacare, Return ‘Hundreds of Billions’ to the People

President Donald Trump called on Senate Republicans Saturday morning to “terminate” Obamacare and redirect its massive subsidies away from insurance companies and back into the hands of American citizens. His message was delivered in a fiery post on Truth Social as the government shutdown continues into its second month.

“I am recommending to Senate Republicans that the Hundreds of Billions of Dollars currently being sent to money sucking Insurance Companies in order to save the bad Healthcare provided by ObamaCare, BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE,” Trump wrote. He proposed that Americans should be able to use the returned funds to buy their own healthcare and “have money left over.”

“In other words, take from the BIG, BAD Insurance Companies, give it to the people, and terminate, per Dollar spent, the worst Healthcare anywhere in the World, ObamaCare,” he added.

Trump also reiterated a long-held position on Senate rules, saying, “we must still terminate the Filibuster!” — a reference to the 60-vote threshold that has stalled conservative legislation for years.

The push received immediate support from Senator Rick Scott (R-FL), who announced he is drafting legislation to implement Trump’s proposal. “We must stop taxpayer money from going to insurance companies and instead give it directly to Americans in HSA-style accounts,” Scott posted to X. “This will increase competition & drive down costs.”

Trump’s post comes amid growing conservative frustration with Obamacare’s subsidies — particularly as Democrats refuse to negotiate a continuing resolution to end the government shutdown without extending those subsidies.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has also hammered Democrats over the impasse, accusing them of trying to ram through funding for policies like taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants. “The expiring ObamaCare subsidy at the end of the year is a serious problem,” Johnson said last month. “We’re throwing good money at a bad, broken system, and so it needs real reforms.”

The shutdown, now in its 39th day, is the longest in U.S. history. Democrats have blocked the GOP’s clean funding bills over a dozen times, insisting on attaching extensions of the controversial Affordable Care Act provisions.

Democrats, meanwhile, are doubling down. With recent victories at the polls, they appear poised to make healthcare the central issue of their midterm strategy. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) declared, “One of the reasons that the Democrats had so much success is an appreciation that the Democrats are trying to protect health care for the American people.”

But Trump and conservatives argue that Democrats are protecting a system that’s fundamentally broken. Trump’s plan — to seize the Obamacare subsidy money and repurpose it into direct cash for Americans — reflects a populist approach that challenges both the insurance lobby and the entrenched bureaucracies behind the Affordable Care Act.

Trump’s latest broadside against Obamacare echoes his prior remarks from October, when he called the program a “disaster” with “rates going through the roof for really bad healthcare.”

While Democrats may see health care as a political winner, Republicans appear ready for the fight — with Trump leading the charge to upend the system, bypass the insurance giants, and put the power, and the money, back in the hands of the American people.
