President Donald Trump ordered U.S. military forces to carry out airstrikes on ISIS targets in Northwest Nigeria on Christmas Day, declaring that the terrorist group had been given ample warning to stop targeting Christians — and had failed to do so.
The strikes were announced by Trump on Truth Social, where he described them as “powerful and deadly,” aimed at ISIS-affiliated extremists engaged in what he called the systematic slaughter of innocent Christians in the region.
“Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum in Northwest Nigeria, who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at levels not seen for many years, and even Centuries,” Trump wrote. “I have previously warned these Terrorists that if they did not stop the slaughtering of Christians, there would be hell to pay, and tonight, there was.”
Trump continued, “The Department of War executed numerous perfect strikes, as only the United States is capable of doing. Under my leadership, our Country will not allow Radical Islamic Terrorism to prosper. May God Bless our Military, and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all, including the dead Terrorists, of which there will be many more if their slaughter of Christians continues.”
War Secretary Pete Hegseth praised the operation and emphasized that the United States had made its position clear long before the strikes.
“The President was clear last month,” Hegseth posted. “The killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria (and elsewhere) must end. The @DeptofWar is always ready, so ISIS found out tonight — on Christmas. More to come… Grateful for Nigerian government support & cooperation. Merry Christmas!”
Hours before the announcement, the War Department posted a historical reminder of American resolve on Christmas Day, sharing an image of George Washington’s 1776 crossing of the Delaware River.
“Christmas night, 1776… The world slept while Washington crossed the Delaware. We carry his legacy,” the post read.
That crossing, which resulted in a surprise attack on Hessian forces near Trenton, New Jersey, marked one of the most pivotal early victories in the Revolutionary War. Now, over two centuries later, Trump and his administration are channeling that same wartime resolve — this time, in defense of persecuted Christians abroad.
