House Majority Whip Tom Emmer is demanding the immediate deportation of Somali immigrants tied to the massive welfare fraud scandal engulfing Minnesota — a case that has already seen dozens of charges and is suspected of involving up to $9 billion in stolen taxpayer funds.
In a blunt statement shared Tuesday, Emmer called for both the deportation of illegal immigrants and the denaturalization of naturalized Somali citizens connected to the fraud, vowing to push for new laws if necessary to make it happen.
“I have three words regarding Somalis who have committed fraud against American taxpayers: Send them home,” Emmer said. “If they’re here illegally, deport them immediately; if they’re naturalized citizens, revoke their citizenship and deport them quickly thereafter. If we need to change the law to do that, I will.”
Emmer also singled out Somali nationals with suspected terrorist ties and others who may have lied during the immigration process.
“Our nation will not tolerate those who take advantage of our charity and refuse to assimilate into our culture,” he added. “If any naturalized Somalis had undisclosed ties to terrorist organizations like Al-Shabaab, I want to see their citizenship revoked and their asses sent back immediately. Same goes for anyone who is found to have committed marriage fraud during the immigration process.”
The fraud case exploded into the public eye after independent journalist Nick Shirley released a viral 42-minute exposé that appeared to show numerous daycare and learning centers in Minneapolis — flush with taxpayer money — sitting completely empty. Shirley’s footage prompted federal agencies to fan out across the city this week, conducting door-to-door checks at suspected fraud sites.
Federal prosecutors say the schemes involve state childcare and healthcare programs, with reports that some of the funds were funneled through shell organizations back to Somalia and even to the terror group Al-Shabaab. The scope of the fraud, which dates back years, is now being estimated at $9 billion, according to Justice Department sources.
Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed Monday that 98 individuals have already been charged, 85 of whom are of Somali descent. She emphasized that the prosecutions were just beginning, warning lawmakers to “buckle up.”
The Trump administration has already revived efforts to strip citizenship from individuals involved in serious fraud or terrorism. According to internal targets, federal attorneys have been instructed to file 100 to 200 denaturalization cases per month. Homeland Security and the Justice Department say Minnesota has become the epicenter of the operation.
Emmer, who represents Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District, made clear that he will continue to apply pressure in Washington to ensure those responsible are brought to justice — and removed from the country.
“This is about protecting American taxpayers, our communities, and the rule of law,” Emmer said. “Anyone who defrauds this country has no right to stay in it.”
