President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Iran early Friday morning, vowing that the United States would “come to the rescue” if the Iranian regime resorts to violence against its own citizens as anti-government protests enter their sixth day.
“If Iran shots [sic] and violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “We are locked and loaded and ready to go. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The protests began last weekend in Tehran, sparked by deepening economic turmoil and government mismanagement. Demonstrators have been heard chanting slogans such as “death to the dictator” and “freedom.” According to reports, at least seven people — including both protesters and regime security forces — have been killed since the unrest began.
Trump’s warning follows a week of increasingly aggressive rhetoric against the Iranian regime. Earlier this week, he expressed full support for additional Israeli strikes if Tehran continues pursuing ballistic missile technology or nuclear capabilities.
In response, a senior Iranian official with the country’s Supreme National Security Council accused the U.S. and Israel of fueling the protests and warned of regional consequences if America intervenes.
“With the statements by Israeli officials and Donald Trump, what has been going on behind the scenes is now clear,” the official posted on X. “Trump should know that U.S. interference in this internal matter would mean destabilizing the entire region and destroying America’s interests. The American people should know — Trump started this adventurism. They should be mindful of their soldiers’ safety.”
The bulk of the violence so far has been concentrated in western Iran. Iranian officials have pledged to crack down on the unrest, with one local official promising to treat protesters “decisively and without leniency.” Arrests have included women and children, according to local reports.
On Thursday, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian broke with the regime’s usual deflection tactics and admitted that internal failures were to blame for the economic crisis.
“We are to blame… Do not look for America or anyone else to blame. We must serve properly so that people are satisfied with us…. It is us who have to find a solution to these problems,” Pezeshkian said, according to Reuters.
Iran’s economy has been spiraling out of control, with the national currency collapsing to 1.42 million rials to the dollar — a staggering 56% drop over the past six months. Inflation has surged, with food prices rising more than 70% year over year.
As tensions rise, Trump’s vow to intervene sets the stage for a potential showdown with the Iranian regime as it weighs whether to escalate force against its own people or relent under mounting domestic and international pressure.
