President Donald Trump isn’t bluffing anymore. During a speech in Detroit, Trump announced that sanctuary cities and states will begin losing federal funding on February 1, delivering a major blow to leftist jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with immigration enforcement.
“Starting February 1, we’re not making any payments to sanctuary cities or states having sanctuary cities because they do everything possible to protect criminals at the expense of American citizens,” Trump said, making it crystal clear that the days of rewarding lawlessness are over.
The president pointed to states like California, Illinois, and New York as major offenders. Each one has adopted radical open-borders policies that shield violent illegal aliens while forcing taxpayers to foot the bill. Several of the nation’s largest cities, including New York City, are also in the crosshairs.
Opponents of sanctuary policies have long warned that these jurisdictions create safe havens for dangerous criminals. ICE detainers are routinely ignored, allowing violent offenders to walk free. Victims and families are left to suffer while Democrat officials prioritize illegal aliens over their own citizens.
Trump has had enough. “It breeds fraud and crime and all of the other problems that come,” he said. “So we’re not making any payment to anybody that supports sanctuary cities.”
The Justice Department released a list last year identifying a dozen states and several major cities as sanctuary jurisdictions. Now they’re about to feel the consequences. While Trump did not outline which specific programs will be impacted, the financial hit is expected to be significant.
When pressed by reporters, Trump didn’t blink. “You’ll see. It will be significant,” he said. This isn’t a negotiating tactic. It’s a long-overdue crackdown on jurisdictions that mock federal law and endanger their own communities.
Legal challenges are expected, but the administration has already shown it’s willing to stand firm. The Department of Health and Human Services recently froze social services funding to five states due to fraud concerns. Programs affected included child care, welfare assistance, and social service grants. The message is simple: states that break the law won’t get rewarded.
The federal government has the power of the purse, and Trump is finally using it. If Democrat leaders want to play games with public safety, they’ll do so without federal money. The era of coddling criminals and defying immigration law is coming to a close. Starting February 1, the bill comes due.
