JD Vance Heads to Minneapolis to Back ICE, Blast Democrat-Led Sanctuary Policies

Vice President JD Vance is set to visit Minneapolis on Thursday in a high-profile show of support for federal immigration officers amid mounting tensions, riots, and anti-ICE protests gripping the state.

Before heading to what officials are calling “ground zero” for anti-ICE violence, Vance will make a stop in Toledo, Ohio, where he’ll deliver remarks at an industrial shipping facility. His speech is expected to emphasize President Trump’s economic agenda, focusing on slashing prices, boosting wages, and revitalizing job growth in the heart of the Midwest.

The second leg of his trip will bring him directly into the eye of the storm — Minneapolis — where Vance will host a roundtable with local leaders, give prepared remarks, and meet directly with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to “reinforce the White House’s unwavering support,” according to senior administration officials.

“Minnesota has become ground zero for attacks on ICE officials and illegal, violent anti-ICE protests,” one White House source told The Daily Wire. The administration has blamed Minnesota Democrats for encouraging sanctuary policies and for turning a blind eye to fraud and organized obstruction of federal enforcement efforts.

Vance will spotlight what he calls the Trump administration’s “commitment to restoring law and order,” and will take aim at sanctuary city policies that, according to the White House, have directly endangered ICE officers operating in the field.

In addition to backing ICE’s role in arresting thousands of criminal illegal aliens in recent weeks, the vice president plans to highlight the creation of a new Department of Justice role — an Assistant Attorney General focused on prosecuting taxpayer fraud. Vance had announced the initiative last week during a White House press briefing, saying the role would initially focus on Minnesota but would expand nationally.

“To make sure that we prosecute the bad guys and do it as swiftly and efficiently as possible … we are creating a new assistant attorney general position who will have nationwide jurisdiction over the issue of fraud,” Vance said at the time.

He specifically called out the abuse of American benefits programs by non-citizens, vowing that American families will no longer be forced to compete with fraudsters for access to child care, preschool assistance, and other federally funded programs.

“Those programs should go to American citizens,” Vance said, “not be defrauded by Somali immigrants and others.”

The visit to Minneapolis comes amid intensifying federal scrutiny of the state’s Democratic leadership. FBI subpoenas have already hit the offices of Governor Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey in connection to interference in ICE operations. Trump administration officials have accused them of obstructing law enforcement and enabling violent protests, some of which have directly targeted churches, ICE officers, and public officials.
