Trump Seeks Quick End To Shutdown: ‘NO CHANGES’

President Donald Trump is calling for immediate passage of the federal spending package without any last-minute amendments, warning that continued gridlock will only inflict damage on the country. The federal government has remained shut down since last weekend.

“There can be NO CHANGES at this time,” Trump posted on Truth Social Monday afternoon, signaling firm support for the current version of the package. “We will work together in good faith to address the issues that have been raised, but we cannot have another long, pointless and destructive Shutdown that will hurt our Country so badly — One that will not benefit Republicans or Democrats. I hope everyone will vote, YES!”

Trump’s message comes amid a push by some conservatives, including Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), to insert the SAVE Act into the appropriations package. The bill would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections, a move Senate Democrats have fiercely opposed.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has made clear that including the SAVE Act would kill the bill’s chances in the Senate. “The SAVE Act is nothing more than Jim Crow 2.0. It would disenfranchise millions of Americans,” he said. “Every single Senate Democrat will vote against any bill that contains it. Speaker Johnson should tell SAVE Act Republicans to stand down or else this shutdown will be on them.”

Trump, however, appears focused on reopening the government and returning attention to immigration policy through separate negotiations. “I’m working hard with Speaker Mike Johnson,” he wrote, signaling confidence in the Republican-led House to get the package to the floor.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) addressed reporters on Monday, stating, “We’re gonna get this job done, get the government reopened.” Despite holding just a one-seat Republican majority, Johnson is relying on the fact that most of the spending bills were already passed by the House last month and should not require major changes now.

Under the White House’s deal with Schumer, the Department of Homeland Security would be funded through a short-term continuing resolution, allowing negotiations to continue over long-term immigration enforcement reforms. Democrats are reportedly seeking to curtail some federal immigration tools, including switching from administrative to judicial warrants for immigration arrests, and eliminating the masking of immigration agents — a move some warn could expose ICE agents to doxxing or retaliation amid rising threats.

House Appropriations Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) has signaled support for the current package. During the Rules Committee hearing, she said, “It gives us time, and it gives us leverage to secure the protections we need for our communities.”

While debate continues over the inclusion of voter ID requirements, Trump’s message was unequivocal: pass the bills now, avoid further harm to Americans, and negotiate the rest later. Speaker Johnson is expected to bring the bills to the floor Tuesday.
