Trump To End ICE’s ‘Operation Metro Surge’ In Minnesota, Homan Says

The Trump administration is winding down its aggressive immigration enforcement campaign in Minnesota, dubbed “Operation Metro Surge,” after arresting more than 4,000 individuals and locating thousands of missing migrant children. White House border czar Tom Homan announced the decision Thursday in Minneapolis, saying the mission had achieved its goals and would soon be concluded.

“I have proposed, and President Trump has concurred, that the surge operation conclude,” Homan stated. He credited the success to improved local coordination, a dramatic drop in criminal illegal alien activity, and a noticeable decrease in anti-ICE protest disruptions.

The operation, which deployed a wave of ICE and Border Patrol personnel from across the country into the Twin Cities, will begin drawing down over the coming week. Still, Homan made it clear that enforcement efforts are not slowing down nationwide.

“This is not a retreat,” he said. “We have a lot of work to do across this country to remove public safety risks who shouldn’t even be in this country and to deliver on President Trump’s promise for strong border security and mass deportation.”

Homan noted that 3,364 unaccompanied migrant children who had gone missing after crossing the border were located during the operation. In addition to arrests, federal agents cracked down on fraud and tracked agitators tied to anti-ICE unrest.

A smaller team will remain in Minnesota to complete ongoing investigations and manage the transition back to the local ICE office. Federal officers will also maintain a presence near jails to quickly take custody of illegal aliens released by local authorities.

Trump dispatched Homan to Minneapolis last month to take over the mission from Border Patrol’s Gregory Bovino, whose brash tactics and roving patrols drew scrutiny. Homan shifted focus to violent criminals, but warned that even non-violent illegal immigrants are still subject to deportation.

“I hear all the hate about you should arrest everybody. We are, but we’re prioritizing those who are the biggest threat to our community—the rapists, the murderers, the child molesters,” he said. “President Trump made a promise of mass deportation, and that’s what this country’s gonna get.”

The phaseout of Operation Metro Surge marks the end of one of the most visible enforcement efforts of Trump’s second term, but officials say it’s only the beginning of a broader push to enforce immigration law on a national scale.
