NYC Seeks Emergency Snow Shovelers Ahead Of Blizzard, Requires IDs Not Needed For Most Voters

As a powerful nor’easter bears down on New York City, officials have issued an urgent call for emergency snow shovelers, offering competitive pay but requiring multiple forms of identification that stand in contrast to the city’s voter ID rules.

For the first time in nearly a decade, a blizzard warning has been issued for the city, with forecasters predicting 19 to 24 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 55 miles per hour. New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a State of Emergency, while Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that outreach teams have been mobilized.

The New York City Department of Sanitation said it is recruiting temporary, per diem workers to clear snow and ice from bus stops, crosswalks, fire hydrants, and step streets. The starting wage is $19.14 per hour, rising to $28.71 per hour after 40 hours worked in a single week.

To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old, capable of heavy physical labor, and legally eligible to work in the United States. They are also required to bring two small 1.5 inch square photographs, two original forms of identification along with copies, and a Social Security card to complete registration.

The documentation requirements come as New York City’s voting rules require far less identification for most registered voters. The New York City Board of Elections does not mandate photo ID for the majority of voters. First time voters need only provide a driver’s license number, non driver ID number, or the last four digits of a Social Security number. Those who did not provide identification when registering may still cast an affidavit ballot.

The juxtaposition has reignited debate over identification standards in the city, as officials work to prepare for what could be one of the most significant winter storms in years.
