President Trump placed a celebratory phone call Sunday to the U.S. men’s hockey team in their locker room in Milan, congratulating them moments after their dramatic overtime victory over Canada secured the nation’s first Olympic gold in men’s hockey since 1980.
Video shared online showed players cheering and laughing as President Trump addressed the team over speakerphone. He praised goaltender Connor Hellebuyck in particular, joking that he had seen goalies have slightly worse games and calling the performance unbelievable. The room erupted in laughter and applause.

President Trump then extended an invitation for the team to attend his upcoming State of the Union address, telling them he could arrange transportation. Several players quickly responded that they were in, with one jokingly asking about a pickup in Miami. President Trump assured them arrangements could be made, adding that as president he could ensure smooth travel regardless of weather conditions.
The exchange drew more laughter when President Trump joked that he would have to invite the U.S. women’s team as well, noting their own gold medal victory over Canada just days earlier. He quipped that failing to do so might get him impeached, prompting another round of cheers from the locker room.
As the call wrapped up, President Trump told the players they would be proud of the game for the rest of their lives and said he looked forward to seeing them in person. He joked that while he would shake everyone’s hand, he especially wanted to shake the goalie’s.
FBI Director Kash Patel was also present during the call and appeared in the video, offering a lighthearted remark about driving the bus.
Head coach Mike Sullivan later said the president expressed pride in the team and noted how the game had inspired Americans across the country. Sullivan said he received numerous messages about early morning watch parties and that viewership in the United States was significant, with the president among those watching closely.
The call capped off a historic day for American hockey, with both the men’s and women’s teams defeating Canada to claim gold medals on the Olympic stage.
