Minnesota Governor Tim Walz unveiled a broad new gun control package Tuesday, making clear that he wants to impose a new tax on firearm and ammunition sales as part of the proposal.
The legislative package includes a ban on numerous semiautomatic rifles and certain pistols, along with expanded storage requirements for gun owners. Walz is also advocating for mandatory firearm insurance and additional funding for schools that are considered potential targets of shootings.
According to local reports, the proposed storage requirements would apply specifically to semiautomatic firearms and could allow law enforcement to verify compliance. Critics argue that such provisions raise serious privacy concerns by opening the door to government intrusion into private homes.
The semiautomatic firearm ban and storage mandates are included in HF 3433, which would take effect on January 1, 2027, if approved by the legislature and signed into law. The bill contains a grandfather clause permitting current owners of newly prohibited firearms to retain them, but only after obtaining a certificate of ownership from law enforcement.
Walz’s package also targets what Democrats label “ghost guns,” firearms assembled from kits or parts that may lack serial numbers. Supporters of the legislation say it closes loopholes, while opponents contend it further burdens law abiding citizens.
The proposed tax on gun and ammunition sales is expected to face stiff opposition from Second Amendment advocates, who argue that such a levy amounts to a financial penalty on constitutional rights. With Minnesota already divided over public safety and crime policies, the debate over Walz’s gun agenda is likely to intensify in the weeks ahead.
