President Donald Trump escalated rhetoric in the confrontation with Iran on Sunday, declaring that U.S. and Israeli forces have sunk nine Iranian naval vessels and largely destroyed Tehran’s naval headquarters.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that American forces had “destroyed and sunk 9 Iranian Naval Ships, some of them relatively large and important,” adding, “We are going after the rest — they will soon be floating at the bottom of the sea, also!” He also claimed that in a separate strike, U.S. forces “largely destroyed” Iran’s Naval Headquarters.
The statement comes just one day after Trump announced that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had been killed in joint U.S.–Israeli strikes, dramatically intensifying the regional conflict. With leadership targets reportedly eliminated, the focus now appears to be shifting toward Iran’s conventional military infrastructure.
If confirmed, the reported loss of nine vessels would represent one of the most significant single-day blows ever dealt to Iran’s navy. Tehran’s maritime strategy has long relied on fast-attack craft, missile boats, and asymmetric tactics aimed at threatening shipping lanes near the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint critical to global energy markets. The destruction of both ships and command facilities could substantially degrade Iran’s ability to project power in the Persian Gulf.
Iran’s naval forces are commanded by Rear Admiral Shahram Irani of the regular Iranian Navy and Commodore Alireza Tangsiri of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy. It remains unclear whether either commander was present at the targeted headquarters or affected by the strikes.
Energy markets are expected to react when trading resumes, with oil futures particularly sensitive to any threat to Gulf shipping routes. Iran retains significant missile and drone capabilities, as well as proxy networks across the region, leaving open the possibility of further retaliation.
While independent confirmation of the naval losses has not yet been publicly detailed, Trump’s declaration signals that the joint U.S.–Israel operation is expanding beyond symbolic targets and into the core of Iran’s military infrastructure.
