Senator Ted Cruz warned Wednesday that the threat of international terrorism targeting the United States is at its highest level in decades as the war with Iran continues to escalate.
Speaking with Fox News host Sean Hannity, the Texas Republican argued that years of weak border enforcement created an opportunity for terrorist operatives to enter the country.
“We had four years under Joe Biden of open borders,” Cruz said. “We had 12 million people flood across the border, basically an open invitation to every terrorist, every Hamas and Hezbollah and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps terrorist to come to America.”
Cruz’s comments came after reports that federal authorities recently alerted California law enforcement to a potential Iranian threat involving drones launched from an offshore vessel.
According to the alert, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise unmanned aerial vehicle attack from a ship off the coast of the United States targeting locations in California if Washington launched strikes against Tehran.
Security experts and lawmakers have increasingly warned about the possibility of “sleeper cell” attacks being activated inside the United States as the conflict in the Middle East intensifies.
Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin raised similar concerns earlier this week.
“I don’t know what sleeper cells are in here if they activate those,” Johnson said, noting that the decision to confront Iran carried serious risks.
“This was not an easy decision for President Trump to make,” he added. “This was a risky decision for Trump to make. But he had to do it.”
President Donald Trump has also addressed the issue, saying his administration has been closely monitoring individuals who may pose a threat.
“I have been briefed and a lot of people came in through Biden with his stupid open border,” Trump told reporters Wednesday. “But we know where most of them are. We’ve got our eye on all of them, I think.”
Despite the concerns, Cruz has strongly supported the ongoing military campaign against Iran.
The operation, known as Operation Epic Fury, has targeted Iranian military infrastructure, missile systems, and leadership figures since it began earlier this year.
Cruz argued that recent strikes that eliminated Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei significantly improved American security.
“Removing the ayatollah makes America much, much safer,” Cruz said during an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union earlier this month.
The Texas senator has also predicted that the conflict will continue until Iran’s current leadership is replaced.
“I think President Trump will continue this fight until they get a regime there that is not a radical Islamist regime that is waging war with America,” Cruz said.
