A Secret Service agent assigned to protect Jill Biden accidentally discharged his firearm last week, injuring himself while on duty at Philadelphia International Airport.
Initial reports from the Secret Service described the injury as a leg wound, but further details indicate the agent suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the buttocks during what officials called a negligent discharge.
A spokesperson for the United States Secret Service confirmed the injury was unintentional and clarified that the wound occurred in the hip area. The agent’s injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
According to local authorities, the firearm discharged while the agent was inside an unmarked Chevrolet SUV at the airport. No other individuals were injured during the incident.
At the time of the discharge, Biden was not present, and officials said the situation did not disrupt her schedule or movements.
Additional claims circulated about the circumstances leading up to the incident, including suggestions the agent may have been using a weapon-mounted light while searching for a misplaced item. However, officials said that detail was not part of the information reported from the scene.
The incident is now under review by the agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility, which handles internal investigations involving conduct and protocol.
The Secret Service has declined to comment further on the ongoing probe, citing concerns that releasing details could interfere with the investigative process.
