Comedian Kathy Griffin said she successfully recovered a $10,000 donation she had made to former Rep. Eric Swalwell’s California gubernatorial campaign, offering an explanation for both the contribution and her decision to take the money back.
Speaking on her podcast “Talk Your Head Off,” Griffin said she was “very proud” to claw back the donation after Swalwell’s campaign unraveled amid allegations of sexual misconduct.
Griffin had previously said she supported Swalwell because he was a “white, straight guy,” and expanded on that reasoning in the episode. She tied her decision to political frustration following the 2024 election, where Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris.
She also pointed to comments from Michelle Obama about whether the country is ready for a woman president, saying that influenced her thinking at the time.
After retrieving the funds, Griffin said she redirected the $10,000 to Democracy Now!.
Swalwell resigned from Congress and ended his campaign following multiple allegations from women accusing him of sexual misconduct, including claims of assault. He has denied criminal wrongdoing, and investigations in California and New York are ongoing.
Griffin said she “did not see that side” of Swalwell when she made the donation, adding that situations like this show how public figures can lead “double lives.”
Other Hollywood figures, including Sean Penn, Robert De Niro, and Jon Hamm, were also reported to have contributed to Swalwell’s campaign before it collapsed.
