Trump Administration Weighs Using Bankrupt Spirit Airlines For Military Transport

The Trump administration is reportedly exploring a plan to take over Spirit Airlines and use part of its fleet for military operations, including transporting troops and cargo.

According to reports, the White House is considering invoking the Defense Production Act to provide financial support to the struggling airline. In return, the Pentagon could utilize Spirit’s excess capacity for defense-related missions.

The proposal would still require approval from the airline’s creditors, as Spirit continues to navigate a precarious financial situation. The budget carrier, known for its low fares and bright-yellow planes, has filed for bankruptcy twice in the past two years.

Rising fuel costs tied to the ongoing conflict with Iran have added further pressure. While Spirit had projected jet fuel prices closer to $2.20 per gallon in the coming years, current prices are hovering above $4 per gallon, complicating its recovery efforts.

During a recent bankruptcy hearing, an attorney for the airline warned that Spirit could be just days away from ceasing operations if additional financing is not secured. A missed interest payment has increased the risk of creditors forcing liquidation.

President Donald Trump has publicly floated the idea of stepping in, suggesting the government could either bail out or acquire the airline outright.

“We’re thinking about doing it,” Trump said, adding that purchasing the company could allow the government to acquire valuable aircraft and assets at a reduced cost and potentially sell them later for a profit.

Separate reporting has indicated the administration could be nearing a deal to provide up to $500 million in financing in exchange for a stake in the airline, though officials have cautioned that details remain speculative until formally announced.

Neither the White House nor the Pentagon has confirmed the plan, and a spokesperson emphasized that any reporting on the structure of a potential deal should be treated as unconfirmed until an official announcement is made.
