President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he has canceled plans to send a U.S. delegation to Pakistan for another round of peace talks with Iran, saying the trip would have been a waste of time.
“I just cancelled the trip of my representatives going to Islamabad, Pakistan, to meet with the Iranians,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Too much time wasted on traveling, too much work.”
The president pointed to what he described as internal chaos within Iran’s leadership as a key reason for halting the trip. “There is tremendous infighting and confusion within their ‘leadership.’ Nobody knows who is in charge, including them,” he added.
Trump also emphasized what he believes is a strong U.S. negotiating position, saying, “We have all the cards, they have none. If they want to talk, all they have to do is call.”
The canceled trip had been expected to include senior figures such as Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who were slated to travel to Islamabad for talks facilitated by Pakistani officials.
Just hours before Trump’s announcement, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the delegation was preparing to depart for Pakistan to engage in direct discussions with Iranian representatives.
Previous negotiations, led by Vice President JD Vance, ended earlier this month without a breakthrough despite extended talks.
Pakistani officials, including Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, have been working to mediate between the two sides, with Iran also engaging in diplomatic outreach to other countries in the region.
The decision to cancel the trip adds further uncertainty to already fragile negotiations, even as a cease-fire between the U.S. and Iran remains in place.
