Ron DeSantis on Monday signed a new congressional map into law, a move Republicans say could position the party to gain up to four additional House seats in Florida ahead of the next election.
The updated map reshapes district boundaries across the state, where Republicans currently hold 20 of 28 seats. Under the new layout, GOP strategists believe the balance could shift to a 24-4 advantage, significantly strengthening the party’s position in the House.
DeSantis celebrated the move publicly, calling it a major step forward as part of a broader effort to realign districts with the state’s population growth. He has argued that Florida’s rapid expansion over recent years justifies revisiting district lines, particularly given what he described as shortcomings in previous census-based apportionment.
The decision follows a recent Supreme Court of the United States ruling that narrowed how states must apply the Voting Rights Act in redistricting cases. That ruling has encouraged several Republican-led states to pursue aggressive mid-decade redistricting efforts, a relatively rare move outside the standard post-census cycle.
Florida now joins other states like Texas, North Carolina, and Missouri in redrawing congressional maps ahead of schedule. At the same time, Democratic-led states have pursued their own redistricting strategies, setting up a nationwide battle over House control through mapmaking.
The new Florida map is expected to face immediate legal challenges. Critics argue it could violate the state’s Fair Districts amendment, which prohibits drawing maps with the intent to favor a political party. DeSantis and his allies have pushed back, suggesting that such restrictions conflict with federal constitutional principles.
Supporters of the new map say it better reflects Florida’s current demographics and political landscape, while opponents warn it could dilute minority representation and undermine fair competition.
With control of the House likely to hinge on a handful of seats, Florida’s redistricting move could play a decisive role in shaping the balance of power in Washington following the next election cycle.
