President Trump’s Border Patrol chief, Mike Banks, announced his immediate resignation Thursday, bringing an unexpected end to the tenure of one of the administration’s top border enforcement officials.
Banks confirmed his departure in comments to Fox News but offered little explanation beyond saying it was simply “time” to step away after nearly four decades of service.
“I feel like I got the ship back on course from the least secure disastrous chaotic border to the most secure border this country has ever seen,” Banks said. “Time to pass the reins, 37 years, it’s time to enjoy the family and life.”
Before taking over the Border Patrol, Banks served as Texas’ border czar and became closely associated with aggressive immigration enforcement policies backed by President Trump. Under his leadership, the administration touted record-low illegal border crossings and significantly expanded operational control efforts along the southern border.
In a farewell message sent to agents Thursday, Banks praised Border Patrol personnel for helping transform what he described as the most chaotic border crisis in modern American history into the most secure border environment the nation has ever seen.
“It was never a goal of mine to become the Chief of the United States Border Patrol but given the opportunity I would do it again 100 times over,” Banks wrote. “What we have accomplished together in the last year and a half is nothing short of amazing.”
Banks emphasized that while progress had been made, more work remains before the federal government achieves what officials describe as complete operational control of the border.
Multiple Border Patrol sources reportedly said the resignation came as a surprise internally, with some agents describing themselves as “caught off guard” by the sudden announcement.
Banks also faced controversy during his time in leadership. Earlier this year, reports surfaced alleging he had made repeated overseas trips involving prostitutes and boasted about the encounters to colleagues. However, the National Border Patrol Council stated the allegations were investigated and that Banks was ultimately cleared of wrongdoing.
Union president Paul Perez defended Banks, arguing that his willingness to hold senior leadership accountable had created enemies within the agency.
“That someone would anonymously dredge up some unfounded allegation as a means to smear Banks today shows how desperate they are to prevent him from holding people accountable for doing their jobs,” Perez said.
Banks’ resignation comes amid broader leadership changes within the Department of Homeland Security under Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who assumed control of the department following the departure of Kristi Noem amid mounting scandals.
During that transition period, immigration enforcement operations also shifted leadership roles involving officials such as border czar Tom Homan and former Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino, who later retired after leading several high-profile immigration sweeps.
Banks first joined Border Patrol in 2000 following a decade of service in the U.S. Navy. He said he now plans to return to Texas and focus on spending time with his family and managing his ranch.
