Tensions flared during President Trump’s visit to China after a Secret Service agent reportedly became involved in a heated standoff with Chinese security officials while accompanying the White House press pool in Beijing.
According to reports, the confrontation erupted when Chinese officials attempted to block an armed Secret Service agent from entering a secure area because he was carrying a firearm, despite armed protection being standard procedure for American presidential security personnel traveling overseas.
Chinese authorities reportedly demanded the agent surrender his weapon before entering the restricted section, triggering a tense back-and-forth that delayed the White House press pool for roughly 30 minutes as journalists attempted to reach President Trump’s motorcade.
The chaotic exchange was partially captured on a live BBC broadcast, with frustrated reporters repeatedly demanding access while officials argued nearby. At one point, journalists could reportedly be heard shouting, “We have to go!” as confusion mounted around the checkpoint.
Eventually, another Secret Service agent who had already gained access returned to escort the reporters through the area. Even after the group began moving toward the motorcade, additional Chinese officials reportedly rushed toward them in an effort to stop their advance before the American press ultimately reached the convoy.
The disorder was not limited to the security confrontation. In a separate incident Thursday, a female White House staffer was reportedly knocked to the ground and trampled by Chinese reporters attempting to force their way into a room ahead of a meeting between President Trump and Xi Jinping.
The aide reportedly suffered bruising during the incident but avoided serious injuries.
The scenes contrasted sharply with the lavish state welcome China organized for President Trump upon his arrival Wednesday evening. Chinese officials greeted the president with a large ceremonial reception as he stepped off Air Force One in Beijing ahead of high-stakes meetings with Xi.
President Trump and Xi spent much of Thursday engaged in bilateral discussions covering trade, security, and economic relations before attending a formal banquet at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People.
“It was a fantastic day,” President Trump said during remarks at the banquet. “And in particular, I want to thank President Xi, my friend, for this magnificent welcome.”
Trump also described earlier discussions with Chinese officials as “extremely positive and productive,” signaling optimism about ongoing negotiations between the two global powers despite the behind-the-scenes friction involving security and media access.
