Zohran Mamdani Skips Israel Day Parade While Already Talking About Re-Election

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani skipped Sunday’s Israel Day Parade and instead spent part of the day discussing his plans to seek re-election in 2029 — despite having served only five months in office.

Mamdani, who has quickly become one of the most controversial figures in New York politics, said during an interview on 1600 AM’s The Black Information Network that he already hopes to remain in office for eight years.

“This is a job of a lifetime. I can’t imagine anything else I’d rather like,” Mamdani said while discussing his future political ambitions.

The mayor’s absence from the annual Israel Day Parade drew immediate attention, with critics noting he became the first New York City mayor to skip the event.

The parade has historically been viewed as a unifying public gathering celebrating New York’s large Jewish community and the city’s relationship with Israel.

Mamdani has faced ongoing criticism over his harsh rhetoric toward the Jewish state and his alignment with far-left political causes.

The mayor also recently ignited backlash from billionaire hedge fund executive Ken Griffin after appearing in a social media video outside Griffin’s residence to celebrate the passage of a new pied-à-terre tax targeting luxury second homes.

The tax, approved in Albany, is aimed at wealthy non-residents who own expensive New York properties.

Business leaders and financial executives have argued the rhetoric surrounding the tax unfairly demonizes successful individuals and risks driving investment out of the city.

Mamdani defended the policy Sunday, insisting predictions that wealthy residents and corporations would flee New York over higher taxes have repeatedly failed to materialize.

The mayor has also secured major financial backing from Albany for several of his progressive initiatives.

Gov. Kathy Hochul and Democratic lawmakers approved billions of dollars in aid that helped support Mamdani’s early childhood expansion plans and stabilize the city’s budget.

Despite only being months into his tenure, Mamdani has already become one of the most polarizing mayors in recent city history as he pushes an aggressive left-wing agenda while drawing mounting criticism from business leaders, moderates, and pro-Israel groups.
