Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu predicted the Iranian regime is living on borrowed time and vowed that Israel will continue working to help the Iranian people remove their rulers from power.
Speaking with CNBC, Netanyahu said the outcome of the ongoing conflict remains uncertain but argued that Iran’s leadership has been significantly weakened.
“We’ve wreaked a lot of damage to this regime, not destroyed it, but weakened it. We see the cracks propagating in the regime,” Netanyahu said.
The Israeli leader stressed that regime change remains central to achieving a lasting resolution.
“We have to help the Iranian people to bring down this regime, and that hasn’t changed,” he said, while acknowledging the timing remains uncertain.
Netanyahu also warned Tehran against escalating the conflict further, arguing that both Israel and the United States remain prepared to take additional military action if necessary.
“There is a tactical game that is being played, and Iran surely knows what the president has said,” Netanyahu said. “US forces are ready. I think Iran should take that into account.”
“They’re playing with fire,” he added.
The comments come as ceasefire discussions remain stalled following a new Iranian attack in the Persian Gulf on Wednesday.
President Trump said this week that negotiations are “rapidly evolving” but cautioned that the US naval blockade could remain in place for an extended period if a satisfactory agreement is not reached.
“I don’t know. I mean, I think it could be [closed through Labor Day], but I think it’s unlikely. I think that we’ll have it. I think this will resolve itself fairly quickly,” Trump said during his interview on the “Pod Force One” podcast.
Netanyahu echoed that uncertainty, describing the endgame as an “open question.”
“The president is weighing many options,” he said.
US Central Command reported that American forces intercepted three Iranian one-way attack drones that were headed toward civilian shipping traffic in regional waters. CENTCOM also said US forces conducted self-defense strikes against an Iranian military ground control station on Qeshm Island.
Netanyahu also brushed aside questions about reports that Trump had angrily confronted him during a recent phone call. Trump confirmed earlier this week that he used strong language while discussing Israeli military operations in Lebanon.
“I’m not going to get into details of our conversations. We’ve had thousands,” Netanyahu said.
While acknowledging occasional disagreements, he emphasized the strength of the relationship between the two leaders.
“We always find a way to work them out. And we do so as great friends,” Netanyahu said.
He added with a laugh: “If you think this is a crisis, you should be in some other conversations.”
