President Trump announced Saturday that the United States and Iran are scheduled to sign a peace agreement on Sunday that would permanently prohibit Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons and reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz to global shipping.
“The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN TO ALL,” Trump wrote in a lengthy statement on Truth Social.
The president described the agreement as a “WALL TO NO NUCLEAR WEAPON” for Iran and declared that the Iranian regime no longer seeks to acquire a nuclear arsenal.
“In fact, they no longer want a Nuclear Weapon, nor will they have one, either through purchase, development, or any other form of procurement,” Trump said.
While announcing the deal, Trump acknowledged that some issues remain unresolved, including the final disposition of Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpile. He said those matters would be addressed later and reiterated that the United States retains the capability to act if Iran fails to uphold its commitments.
“At the appropriate time, when all is calm, we will go in and get the Nuclear Dust, buried deep under the powerful sunken granite mountains, thanks to our beautiful B-2 Bombers and their brilliant pilots, and downblend and destroy it, whether in Iran, or the United States,” the president said.
Trump also emphasized that his administration’s approach to Iran differs sharply from previous administrations.
“Our relationship with Iran is a much different and better one than previous Administrations have had,” he said.
The president specifically contrasted the agreement with the 2015 nuclear deal negotiated under President Barack Obama, criticizing the financial concessions made by the previous administration.
“Unlike Obama’s Hundreds of Billions of Dollars in payments to them, including 1.7 Billion Dollars in green, cold cash, no money will exchange hands,” Trump wrote, referring to longstanding disputes over frozen Iranian assets and Tehran’s push to regain access to billions of dollars held under sanctions.
Trump said he hopes the agreement will usher in a new era of cooperation between the United States, Iran, and the broader Middle East.
“We look forward to working with Iran, and the entire Middle East, long into the future,” the president said. “Hopefully, this process will all work out quickly, easily, and smoothly. If it doesn’t, we have the ultimate alternative, hopefully never to be used again!”
The announcement marks the latest development in months of stop-and-start negotiations with Tehran conducted through intermediaries. Earlier, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said an agreement could be reached within 24 hours, with technical-level talks expected to begin next week.
Those discussions are expected to focus on implementing Iran’s pledge to eliminate its stockpile of highly enriched uranium and ensuring that the regime does not pursue the development of a nuclear weapon in the future.
