Newly released body-camera footage shows convicted killer Karmelo Anthony crying and appearing to confess moments after fatally stabbing Texas teenager Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet in Frisco.
The video, released Friday by Collin County as part of evidence admitted during Anthony’s murder trial, captures the then-17-year-old being detained near the scene of the deadly confrontation.
As a school resource officer informed dispatch that he had the “alleged suspect” in custody, Anthony can be heard responding, “I’m not alleged. I did it.”
Anthony then appeared to explain his actions while sobbing.
“I’m not alleged. I did it. He put his hands on me. I told him not to. He put his hands on me,” Anthony told officers.
The footage shows Anthony visibly emotional as officers handcuffed him and escorted him away from the scene. At one point, he asked an officer, “Am I going to be OK?”
Prosecutors said Anthony stabbed 17-year-old Austin Metcalf with a folding knife during a confrontation after being asked to leave a tent designated for another school’s athletes during a rain delay at the track meet.
Anthony claimed he acted in self-defense, but jurors rejected that argument earlier this month. He was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison.
The body-camera footage was among dozens of exhibits made public following the conclusion of the trial and provides a dramatic look at Anthony’s immediate reaction in the aftermath of the fatal stabbing that shocked the North Texas community.
