A growing divide is emerging among California Democrats after Governor Gavin Newsom unveiled his support for a national billionaire tax while continuing to oppose a similar proposal in his own state.
Representative Ro Khanna quickly criticized the governor’s position, accusing Newsom of trying to have it both ways by supporting higher taxes on the wealthy at the federal level while rejecting California’s own billionaire tax initiative.
Newsom recently called for a nationwide tax targeting America’s wealthiest individuals, arguing that the federal government is the proper venue for addressing wealth inequality. He also proposed new policies aimed at limiting tax loopholes used by the ultra-wealthy and preventing the creation of what he described as a permanent class of inherited wealth.
At the same time, Newsom remains firmly opposed to California’s proposed billionaire tax, which would impose a one-time five percent levy on the assets of billionaires residing in the state. The measure is expected to appear on the ballot later this year and has become one of the biggest political battles in California.
The governor argues that a state-level billionaire tax would encourage wealthy residents to relocate to lower-tax states, ultimately shrinking California’s tax base and harming long-term revenues. Newsom has maintained that only a nationwide approach can prevent the wealthy from moving assets and residences to avoid taxation.
Khanna rejected that argument and accused Newsom of political hypocrisy, arguing that California should lead the nation on taxing extreme wealth just as it has attempted to lead on environmental and social policy initiatives.
The disagreement highlights a broader battle taking place within the Democratic Party between establishment leaders and progressive activists over how aggressively government should pursue wealth redistribution and tax policy reform.
Supporters of the California proposal argue that billionaires should contribute more to fund healthcare, education, and social programs, while opponents warn that the policy could drive investment, innovation, and jobs out of the state.
With both Newsom and Khanna viewed as potential contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, the billionaire tax fight is increasingly being viewed as an early battle over the future direction of the Democratic Party.
